Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 How much is true love worth?

With a mocking expression on his face, "Is having money just something for you to be envious of?"

Daisy Stone's eyes reddened, almost choking up, "Clara, they didn't mean it, don't be angry. I said I wanted to treat, so I should pay for this meal."

She gritted her teeth and handed the card to the waiter.

"Wait!"

Samuel Grant frowned in displeasure, "Clara Bennett, it's just a meal, you don't lack the money. But for Daisy, this money means a lot of hard work. You two are good sisters, you should help each other."

His tone was full of reproach, as if saying Clara was being too petty.

Clara squinted slightly and said calmly, "Samuel Grant, who exactly is your girlfriend? If you really care about her, then pay for her."

Samuel's face tensed up, "Clara, why have you become so heartless?"

Didn't she realize his situation?

Though he was a member of the Grant Family, he was an illegitimate child not publicly acknowledged by the family.

Apart from a fixed monthly allowance, the Grant Family wouldn't give him a penny more.

Even so, every time he asked for living expenses, he had to do so with great humility.

On the surface, he seemed to be flourishing, but in reality, it was all a façade.

All the clothes he wore were bought by Clara.

This meal alone would cost tens of thousands.

He himself was strapped for cash, unable to pay that much.

"I'm heartless?" Clara sneered, "Am I the one forcing her to pretend to be rich? Besides, Daisy has already taken out her card to pay. Do you think she wants to show off to friends but can't actually pay?"

Clara tilted her head and spoke slowly, "Waiter, what are you waiting for? She already handed you the card, hurry up and settle the bill."

The waiter, snapped out of it, came over to take the card from Daisy, but she was holding onto it tightly.

"Miss, please loosen your grip, I clearly heard you say you'd treat this meal and let everyone order freely. If you truly want to treat, be generous."

The waiter took the card with effort and swiped it on the POS machine, "Please enter your PIN."

Daisy almost bit through her lip, reluctantly entering the PIN.

"Sorry, your card has insufficient balance," the waiter kindly reminded.

"How can it be not enough?" Daisy was stunned.

The waiter looked helpless, rolling his eyes, "It's your card, don't you know how much is in it?"

Clearly knowing there's no money, still asking!

If you don't want to pay, just say so, what's with all this pretense.

Daisy looked to Clara for help, "Clara, I just remembered I paid a year's rent last week, could you advance this meal cost for me? I'll pay you back and even write an IOU..."

"No." Clara firmly refused, saying calmly, "I don't want our friendship to be tainted by money. You are the most precious and important person to me!"

As she said this, she glanced at the time, showing an apologetic smile, "See if there's another solution? Jack is here to pick me up, I'll be heading off if there's nothing else!"

Seeing Clara really planning to leave, Daisy hurriedly grabbed Samuel, "Don't let her go, or what will we do after?!"

"Clara!"

Samuel quickly stepped in front of her, grabbing her wrist to stop her from leaving.

"You clearly know she doesn't have that much money, if you leave it will only cause more trouble, how will she hold her head up among her classmates later?"

Clara's gaze flashed with derision, "How is her embarrassment any of my business? Samuel, are you supporting her because there's something secret between you two?"

"What nonsense are you thinking?!" Samuel's expression turned gloomy, "If you keep imagining things, then we should break up!"

Before, he always controlled her with this sentence, bringing up a breakup whenever things didn't go his way.

"Slap—"

Just as the words fell, Clara slapped him directly.

The sound was loud, echoing in the room.

"Clara, how can you hit Samuel!" Daisy rushed over, saying, "Go apologize, or he'll be angry!"

Samuel, coming to his senses, widened his eyes in disbelief, "Clara, have you gone mad?"

How could she suddenly do something so impulsive?

Clara, feigning anger, said, "Breaking up with me just to avoid paying for a friend's meal, could it be you two have some secret deal?"

The others had picked up on some clues.

Whose boyfriend was Samuel really?

Why was he repeatedly helping Daisy?

Could they secretly be together, excluding Clara, the official girlfriend?

The crowd's gaze turned strange.

"Clara, you've misunderstood. Samuel and I only met because of you, there's really only friendship between us."

Daisy cautiously reached out, attempting to hold Clara's hand, anxiously explaining.

Clara noticed her action and stepped back to avoid it.

"Samuel Grant, since you want to break up, I'm not someone who clings on. As everyone's here, let them be witnesses; from now on, there's no relationship between me and Samuel Grant!"

Samuel's face darkened suddenly, "Clara, take back what you just said before I lose my temper!"

He couldn't afford to break up with Clara before his plan was complete.

Without Clara's support, how could he become the heir of the Grant Family and be accepted by the family?

He walked over with a sullen face, pulling her out of the private room, "Clara, you should know your limits!"

Clara sneered, raising her hand to slap him again, "Samuel Grant, do you think I have no temper? Is it because I've been too good to you that you've forgotten your original position?"

He was just an illegitimate child, born from Oliver Grant's affair with the Foster family's illegitimate daughter, Emma Foster.

In her past life, she was actually manipulated by someone like this!

Utterly ridiculous!

Samuel was slapped sideways, a flash of malice in his eyes.

Clara not only laid hands on him but had slapped him several times.

Things like this had never happened before, could she really have realized something?

"Clara, is there some misunderstanding?" Samuel raised his head, regaining a gentle expression, "I help Daisy because she's your good friend. If you really don't want to pay, then forget it."

Indeed, when one's own interests are involved, people always think of themselves first.

Last lifetime, when exposed, didn't they claim true love?

Let's see how much this so-called true love is actually worth!

"Daisy is indeed my good friend, but she's also an adult, she can't always expect me to pay."

Clara stepped forward, looking at his swollen face, "Looks like those two slaps earlier finally woke you up a bit!"

Samuel licked his cheek with his tongue, suppressing his frustration, "Shall I take you home?"

"Don't rush, we should wait for Daisy, we can't just leave our 'good friend' behind."

She wanted to see how Daisy would handle the situation without her payment.
