Liliette stood on the high ground, taking in the sweeping view of the mine. Her white robe and veil fluttered gently in the breeze. She seemed utterly unaffected by the oppressive heat and arid climate, her green eyes gleaming with quiet curiosity.
“So, this is the place that brings prosperity to Arcadia,” she murmured to herself.
The copper mine was a vast, spiraling pit of dark red earth, as wide as a city and plunging into the ground like a sheer cliff. It was even more awe-inspiring than the first time she had seen the ocean.
As a blast was imminent, miners working on different tiers were climbing onto the carts pulled by horses, making their way out. When Liliette waved, they quickly doffed their hats and bowed their heads.
“I didn’t expect you to personally encourage the workers.”
Liliette turned to look at Baron Valte, the chief overman of the first mine, standing a step behind her. He inclined his head politely.
