The familiar clean air permeated Misaki's room. Pale pink curtains swayed in the summer breeze, and a single rose on the desk emitted a gentle fragrance. This space, which usually brought peace of mind, felt strangely heavy today.

"It's the bathroom, right? Is she taking too long?" Reiko muttered in a low voice. She glanced at me, a new hardcover novel still in her hand in front of the bookshelf. Her long black hair shimmered in the evening sun, her figure as beautiful as a painting. Usually, it would be a sight that would make me want to hug her from behind, but I didn't even have that余裕 right now.

At the desk by the window, Ryoko was looking at Misaki's textbooks. Her toned body, typical of a volleyball team ace, formed beautiful lines even in her school uniform. Ryoko must have sensed my presence, as she turned around.

"What's wrong? You look so serious," she asked, concerned.

Misaki's smartphone glowed on the table. The sight I had just witnessed when I touched it still weighed heavily on my chest. It had been half a year since the four of us started dating. The days we spent caring for and supporting each other were now about to be greatly shaken.

"Both of you, I have something important to tell you," I began with determination. "It's about Yamashita, the guy who recently became close with Onizuka."

Reiko returned the book, saying, "Oh, that small guy. He suddenly changed, didn't he? I heard a rumor that he calls Onizuka his best friend." A faint hint of wariness was visible in her usual elegance.

"He has a special ability," I said. Both of their movements stopped at my words.

"The power to manipulate people. And..." I gazed at Misaki's smartphone. "Misaki is being controlled by that power."

"Misaki... is being controlled?" Ryoko's voice was tinged with disbelief. Reiko also moved away from the bookshelf and sat next to me. The scents of their perfumes mingled, and the fragrance that usually calmed my heart now felt strangely poignant.

"I saw it just now when I touched her smartphone," I quietly began to explain. "Yamashita visited Misaki's house and gave her five commands. Among them was the command to... 'cut off our relationship.'"

Reiko gasped softly. I could see Ryoko's hands trembling. I withheld the details of what happened between Yamashita and Misaki from them. It was too much for me to explain to them, as I hadn't even processed it myself. Still, the fact that the precious bond we had woven together was being torn apart by an unseen force must have shocked them both.

"That's why Misaki suddenly became cold to you, Ryuji-kun," Reiko murmured.

"But she's normal with us..."

"Yes, that's right," I nodded. "Yamashita's commands are finely tuned, ordering her to maintain her relationships with everyone else as usual, except for me."

The summer sunlight stained the room red. The passage of time felt strangely pronounced.

"The changes happening at school recently, too," Ryoko suddenly said as if she just realized something. "The girls who took a week off, the ones whose personalities changed, it's all..."

"Yes, I'm sure it is," I clenched my fist. "Victims of Yamashita's ability. I don't know without investigating, but there must be a considerable number."

"Are we going to be okay?" Reiko's voice had a rare tremor of anxiety. I instinctively squeezed her hand. Even at a time like this, the calming effect of our touch surely meant that a genuine bond existed between us.

"Both of you, absolutely do not be alone with Yamashita," I looked at them with a serious gaze. "It might even be dangerous to make eye contact. You could be controlled, just like Misaki now."

Footsteps approached in the hallway, and Misaki returned to the room. She was sweating, her bangs plastered to her forehead. Misaki's face was flushed, and her breathing was ragged. The moment Misaki entered the room, an indescribable scent wafted through the air. A scent that was both savory and fishy. I couldn't bear it anymore. All the feelings I had kept inside surged out like a broken dam.

"Misaki... I'm sorry." I suddenly stood up and knelt before Misaki. "I'm sorry, for not being able to protect you. For not noticing until things got this bad." Tears streamed down my cheeks. Reiko and Ryoko watched, holding their breath. The twilight glow stained this poignant scene red.

"Mmm, haa haa, Sato-kun, what are you saying, Ngh!?" Misaki's voice was cold, like an icy blade. "Mmm, you, ah, have you gone crazy? H-Huh?" Each word deeply cut into my heart. The gentle voice that once called me "Ryuji-kun" was nowhere to be found. Misaki, under Yamashita's control, was like a different person.

"I'm starting to feel unwell, Nghh," Misaki continued coldly. "Can you... please go home, Ugh!?"

Reiko placed a hand on my shoulder. Her hand was firm and trembling.

Ryoko and Reiko quietly approached, whispering, "Let's go home." Their warmth supported my crumbling heart.

As I stood up, I looked at Misaki one last time. There was no longer any trace of the happy days we had woven together as four. Misaki's face vaguely stared into space. Her knees were lightly trembling.

"I'm sorry..." I left the room, leaving one last apology.

Tears streamed down my face as I descended the stairs. Reiko and Ryoko supported me on both sides. Without these two, I surely wouldn't have been able to stand.

As I put on my shoes at the entrance, I made a firm vow. I would definitely get Misaki back. I would definitely bring back that smile. And I would protect the bond of the four of us.

Under the summer twilight, the three of us left the Sakurai residence. This wasn't the end. The real battle was just beginning.

"Let's investigate," I told the two of them. "We will definitely find Yamashita's weakness."

Reiko and Ryoko nodded strongly. The resolve to face this battle, together with those I loved, had sprouted in my heart.
