==============
A faint scent of fragrant olive drifted through the twilight park. Under the crimson sky, the shadows of the playground equipment stretched long. This was our usual monthly meeting spot, where I was to face my former tormentors.
As the clock struck five in the afternoon, I saw Sagara and the others. They, who would usually walk with an intimidating demeanor, now approached with hunched shoulders and timid steps.
"O-Oh, we've been waiting... Sato-san," Sagara's voice trembled. There was no trace of the man who once committed countless evils. Kawauchi and Kizaki also hunched their backs as if they had shrunk the moment they saw me.
"Sit down," I gestured to the bench. It was a secluded spot at the edge of the park, undisturbed by anyone. Even though I had no intention of cornering them today, that single word made them all even more nervous.
"I heard," I began quietly. "You finished all your apologies."
"Y-Yes!" Sagara answered hurriedly. His hand, wiping away sweat, was trembling. "All the victims... to each and every one... properly..."
"We apologized for everything we did," Kizaki, who was next to him, continued. "There were times... when we were... retaliated against..."
"But we didn't give up," Kawauchi added. "Even when we were punched or kicked, we kept bowing our heads until the very end."
A genuine look of remorse appeared on the faces of my former tormentors.
"Lend me your smartphones," I said. The three complied without hesitation. Personal records that they would have absolutely not wanted to show before. First, Sagara's smartphone. The moment I touched it, past memories flashed. ...After-school park. Sagara was prostrating himself before a female student.
"I am truly sorry. I did terrible things to Misa-san back then..." Suddenly, the female student kicked Sagara.
"Do you think an apology will fix everything?" But Sagara didn't run. He just kept apologizing relentlessly. Kizaki and Kawauchi also bowed their heads similarly.
Next, Kizaki's smartphone. ...Behind the gym. Former victims surrounded Kizaki.
"Do you remember? How much you made us suffer." Kizaki was punched and kicked. But he didn't fight back. He just kept repeating, "I am sorry."
Finally, Kawauchi's smartphone. ...Sincere apologies. Earnest remorse. No matter which memory I saw, there was no acting or falsehood whatsoever.
Images flowed in one after another. Deep bows in the hallway. Scenes of prostration in the park. Continuing to apologize even when subjected to violence. And the moments when the victims finally forgave them tearfully.
There was no lie. This was a record of true atonement.
"...It's real," I returned the smartphones to the three. They had certainly changed. The change in Sagara and the others might be the most commendable achievement of the past six months. The rehabilitation program, which began with my threats, had certainly borne fruit.
"Well done," I quietly told them. At my words, everyone let out a sigh of relief.
However, the main topic of today began from here.
"By the way," I changed the subject. "Have you noticed anyone unusual around recently?"
Sagara and the others exchanged glances. Their faces, illuminated by the setting sun, showed no trace of their former harshness.
"Unusual... how?" Sagara tilted his head. The sight of him seriously tying his school tie still felt a bit out of place.
"For example, someone whose personality suddenly changed," I chose my words carefully. "Or someone who came back after about a week off, and their demeanor was different."
"Ah," Kawauchi said as if remembering something. "In our school... come to think of it, no one like that."
"You're still in touch with guys from other schools, right?"
"Yes, well," Sagara replied. He was referring to his former delinquent friends. "But I haven't heard any such stories. Everyone's just... normal..."
Kizaki took out his phone and started checking messages. "Shall I check, just in case?"
"Please." As I watched the three operating their smartphones, I pondered. Yamashita's ability seemed to be used only within our school.
"Sato-san," Sagara suddenly began with a serious expression. "Did something happen?"
His gaze still held its former sharpness. Even after rehabilitation, their insight had not dulled.
"Yes," I hesitated a little but decided to answer honestly. "A new type of bullying might be happening. But it's different from ordinary bullying."
"What can we do..."
"No," I shook my head. "I'll solve this. You all, focus on your rehabilitation."
As night slowly fell, streetlights began to illuminate one by one.
"But," Sagara stood up. "If you need strength..."
"I know," I smiled. "But it's okay. Violence no longer suits you."
Sagara teared up. His comrades nodded. Their true strength now lay in their hearts, which had abandoned violence.
"Sagara," As I stood up, I declared my decision. "Maybe we don't need monthly meetings anymore."
The expressions of the three were colored with anxiety and surprise. The streetlights gently illuminated their faces.
"Eh... Does that mean..." Sagara's voice trembled. "Did we do something again..."
"No," I smiled gently. "I think you're all fine now. Once every six months is enough."
Sighs of relief melted into the night breeze. A faint tear glinted in Kizaki's eye.
"You've worked hard these past six months," I continued. "You completed all your apologies to the victims. In all my observations, you are the first ones I've seen rehabilitate so sincerely."
"Sato-san..." Kawauchi murmured, his voice strained.
"However," I hardened my expression. "If something happens again..."
"It won't!" The three spoke in unison. A smile involuntarily broke through at their reaction.
"I know. I believe you."
The sounds of insects began to echo in the night park. It was proof that the former tormentors had truly rehabilitated.
"Sato-san," Sagara took a step forward. "We will continue... to walk straight on the path of rehabilitation."
"Yes."
"But," Sagara's voice became more serious. "About that new type of bullying you mentioned. If you truly need strength..."
"Don't worry," I said quietly. "This is my battle. You all have a more important role."
"Important... role?"
"Yes. To be an example for your juniors as rehabilitated seniors."
The eyes of the three shone with determination. Their own new form of justice was visible.
As I left, Sagara said one last thing: "Sato-san, please come see our progress again in six months."
"Yes, I will."
Leaving the streetlight-lit park, I vowed in my heart. This time, it was a battle to reclaim the souls stolen by Yamashita. I would definitely save Misaki and the other victims.
The monthly meetings with Sagara and the others were over. But a new battle had just begun.
I recalled the scene I saw on Misaki's smartphone. Ginta's unnaturally glowing eyes. His low, calm voice. And Misaki's controlled figure.
"Yamashita..." I clenched my fist. I would definitely expose the truth. And I would free Misaki, and the school, from this madness. As night fell, the shadows in the classroom deepened further. As if foretelling the dark events to come.
