Chapter 66: Dead is dead.

~~~ [START]
Edward's hand descended swiftly, missing James's neck by an inch.
But just as a smile spread on his lips, Edward's other hand shot forward and punched him in the gut. The force made James's skin creak against his shirt.
And before he could even register, an arm thrust in from nowhere, slamming against James's neck, with Edward moving quickly and grabbing James's head from the sides of the skull with all his effort.
CREAK!
Dust poured when James's head was thrown ten feet from where the body dropped.
Rolling to the ground, with the red in its eyes still shining bright, as though a spark of conscience still lingered.
"Esme?"
The woman stretched her hand to him, assisting him up.
"How's Bella?" One would swear his mouth released breath. "I broke her arm. Is she—"
"Carlisle stopped the bleeding," Esme said, her head shifting to the surrounding chaos. Edward nodded, then did the same.
And on the other side, far from where they could perceive.
Victoria screamed with the roof of her voice; she could feel it in her gut that James was gone.
Her hands trembled, eyes turning to Roselle, who was lying dead on the ground. Arms, head, and legs scattered everywhere, eyes lingering open between life and death, pending.
Then they turned to the little corpses of wolves beside them, but she didn't linger because immediately after his scent graced her nose, she dashed forward.
Grunts followed her footsteps. Figure jumping over the battlefield in a blur and arriving in front of them in that instant.
Breath hitching louder at the sight of James, lying like a corpse right next to them.
But it all changed; everything became more serious when Esme lifted a touch she had gotten from nowhere.
And slowly, eyes stared directly at Victoria's shocked face.
She dropped it. And James's head lit ablaze.
Its skin, not even turning into meat, but skipping into dust. No bone nor smell remaining, just nothingness, only stolen by the breeze that cleaned the floor beneath it.
Lightning struck from the sea of sky above them, small droplets of rain falling.
But only for a moment, because in the next, red covered the clouds, changing the moon to a mirror of blood.
And a shiver was sent through all their spines when they turned to Vlad, who was now standing on the far left.
A height reaching seven feet, a scent that was foreign yet sinister; he was someone else.
"God." The tall figure of what used to be Vlad turned its head upward, its eyes locked on the sky, its powers at work. "You dare mock me, after all I have done, you lock me from your gates with life."
And Alice, the one who was standing right beside him, stumbled back, eyes widened, legs nearly dropping in disbelief.
She didn't know what it was. Long black hair, wearing nothing but armor in place of clothing.
Alucard's eyes lowered, moving below him, meeting nothing but grass that was touched by endless blood.
Then, finally, his eyes turned to Alice, whose eyes were locked onto him, and to a naked Leah, who was half between sober and collapsed.
"And yet, oh heavenly Father, even after releasing me from death, you dare curse my disciple. Done is done, ear for ear. I will climb and—."
"Vlad." The words seeped past Alice's lips.
"No, ghoul, no Vlad..." Alucard said, "Dead is dead."
And with a blink of an eye, his clothes changed in an instant, switching from dark obsidian battle armor to a black suit with a red long coat and hat.
Emmett screamed from behind them, eyes turning to Roselle, who was long turned to a sculptured corpse on the dirt.
But just like that, Sam bit him on the head and, with enough effort, pulled it out, causing his giant body to slam against the ground.
"No, he isn't." Alice's eyes didn't even turn to her brother; her hands just trembled with her gaze still locked on him. "I… I saw him, I saw us getting—"
"You reek of magic ghoul." Alucard didn't even linger; his head just shifted like last time, moving past her. "Much like them."
Alice turned, but her eyes didn't react when two wolves shattered one of Edward's arms into pieces. She didn't even react after Esme ripped off the head of Laurent, who was begging for his life before his fall.
And when Alice turned her eyes back, Alucard was now five feet away.
"Do you trust it?"
"He's not dead." Even though her words held uncertainty, conviction was masterful.
"Dead is dead. Now tell me… do you trust your magic?"
"No… I saw him, he can't be—"
"You own nothing of the dead."
"NO!" The word was not a whisper. It ripped through the air, accompanying her trembling self. Not because of the wind or any exterior disturbance, but because of the break of connection from within her spirit.
She dropped to her knees, her eyes not even staring at him anymore; they were turned to his shadow, which was visible, even under the filth of the blood moon.
"Please come back." She whispered, dry sobs following after. "Please."
Alucard took a step forward, laughter seeping past his lips.
"Do you want to speak to him? Ghoul." The question was silent. "Vlad."
