“Really?” I asked. Upon reflection, though, I wasn’t sure why I was surprised. After all, I had only learned about Kyle’s family history a few hours ago, and I knew there was more about my life before coming to Laurent that I hadn’t told him yet.
“At first, I was simply curious about your original appearance, but then I found myself wanting to know more things about you,” Kyle confessed. “I wondered what kind of place you lived in, what you did there, and how awful your diet must have been for you to be in such poor health.”
“Wait a minute—one of those things is not like the others,” I interjected.
“No? It is the most important question to me, though,” he replied. “It is not simply your lack of appetite that I pondered, but your missing desire for material things or any ambition for power as well. I suppose, actually, you must have a complete lack of any motivation at all.”
