"The Shinjuku War Begins"
After an indeterminate amount of time underground, Shinoa Hīragi slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was Aoki's face and his intense gaze fixed on her.
She sat up, surveying her surroundings. They were underground, in what appeared to be a subway tunnel, though some light still filtered in from above.
"Awake," Aoki said, breaking the silence. "Looks like we're in an underground subway, and it's completely blocked off. No idea where Yūichirō and the others went. It's just us two."
Honestly, getting back to the surface would be trivial for Aoki, but he chose not to. He didn't want to prematurely reveal his full capabilities, and he assumed Shinoa Hīragi wouldn't be able to get them out anyway.
"Mitsuba Sangū and the others?" Shinoa Hīragi's first question was about the others.
"Haven't seen them," Aoki replied flatly.
Suddenly, Yūichirō Hyakuya's voice called out from behind a large boulder.
"Hello! Anyone there?! Shinoa! Aoki! Where are you?!"
At his feet lay the unconscious Corporal Nagai. Yūichirō Hyakuya was alone and vulnerable to a vampire attack, so he was desperate to find the others.
"Hey! Idiot Yūichirō! Where are you?!"
Then, Shihō Kimizuki's voice echoed from another direction, clearly responding to Yūichirō Hyakuya.
"Are you guys okay?!" Yūichirō Hyakuya called back.
"Of course!" Mitsuba Sangū's voice answered. "Yoichi Saotome and I are together. Are Shinoa and Aoki with you?"
"No! Just me! And that guy—he's passed out. He needs medical attention urgently!" Yūichirō Hyakuya shouted.
"Hey! Yūichirō, Aoki and I are over here!" Shinoa Hīragi called out. They realized the ground collapse had separated them into three different groups.
Even though they were relatively close, the boulders made it impossible to reach each other.
"Shinoa! You're okay! That's great!" Yūichirō Hyakuya was relieved. "But! We need to help that guy! He looks really bad!"
Shinoa Hīragi reminded them, "If we get to the surface, there should be a temporary base! He can get treatment there!"
"Then we need to get back to the surface separately," Aoki said, finally speaking. "Once we're up, don't act rashly. Wait until we regroup. Guren said that if fewer than five Vampire Extermination Unit members fight vampires, it's easy to get killed."
Everyone responded.
"Okay, let's meet at the temporary base! I'll get this guy there first!" Yūichirō Hyakuya shouted, hoisting Corporal Nagai onto his shoulder and heading off to find another route to the surface, lacking the strength to break through the boulders.
"Let's go," Aoki said to Shinoa Hīragi as Yūichirō Hyakuya's footsteps faded.
"Mm," Shinoa Hīragi nodded, and followed Aoki. Shihō Kimizuki and the others did the same.
Meanwhile, on the other side of Shinjuku, Mikaela Hyakuya stood silently.
Suddenly, an explosion echoed behind him, followed by a severed vampire arm landing at his feet, then disintegrating into dust.
As the smoke cleared, Mikaela saw a figure in the mist, wielding a black and red sword, their back to him.
The figure turned, and upon seeing Mikaela, raised the sword, pointing it at him.
Guren Ichinose, the supreme commander of the Moon Demon Company Vampire Extermination Unit!
"Damn it, I forgot to kill the commanders," Guren Ichinose said grimly, sword pointed at Mikaela.
Ferid Bathory appeared. "Impressive. You killed several Level 2 armed vampires. Even though they were only Level 2, it's quite impressive for a human. You must be the main force sent by the humans."
"Main force?" Mikaela turned to Ferid Bathory, puzzled.
Ferid Bathory explained, "The elite of the elite in the Vampire Extermination Unit—the Moon Demon Company."
Dozens of vampires, including two nobles, appeared behind Ferid Bathory. "Then, shall we begin? Let's exterminate these inferior humans."
On the other side, the remaining four members of Guren Ichinose's squad and dozens of Moon Demon Company elites stood behind Guren Ichinose.
"Hey, you bastards, does human blood taste good? Let me tell you, this is your last supper," Guren Ichinose said, black tendrils emanating from his sword. "Grant me power, Demon Sword, Mahiru-no-Yo!"
"Everyone, attack! If we hold this line, we win! Kill all the vampires!"
Underground, Aoki and Shinoa Hīragi walked side-by-side. "Anything you want to say, Aoki?"
"Like what?" Aoki asked flatly.
"Like… your girlfriend. You said you weren't a virgin, so you must have a girlfriend. Where is she?" Shinoa Hīragi asked, clearly gossiping.
"Far away," Aoki replied, a fleeting look of longing and sadness crossing his face before vanishing, replaced by his usual cold demeanor.
Shinoa Hīragi, assuming his girlfriend was dead, quickly apologized. "Oh, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have brought that up."
Aoki didn't seem to mind. "Forget me. Tell me about you. Why do you pretend to be someone you hate?"
Shinoa Hīragi was taken aback. "Ah… what are you talking about?"
Aoki continued, "I know. You're not really like this. You're someone who's suffered trauma. You hide your vulnerability behind this optimistic facade, living aimlessly, yet carrying a burden most can't imagine."
"Honestly, you're a lot like my lover."
