"A New Mission"
"What? You think I resemble your lover?" Though Aoki's words resonated with her, Shinoa Hīragi responded with a playful smirk.
"No way, Aoki. That sounds like a proposal! Haha. While you're the most amazing guy I've met, I still wouldn't like you, so give it up."
Seeing Shinoa Hīragi's continued playful evasion, Aoki gave up. He hadn't intended to pursue her; his comments stemmed from concern for a comrade. Since Shinoa Hīragi didn't want to discuss it, he wouldn't push her.
They found a route to the surface and quickly reached the temporary base.
Yūichirō Hyakuya had arrived earlier, sending Corporal Nagai for treatment. However, Mitsuba Sangū and the others were absent; their whereabouts were unknown.
"Let's go," Shinoa Hīragi said, approaching them after Corporal Nagai was settled. "He's stable for now."
Yūichirō Hyakuya visibly relaxed. "Really? That's great."
"But Lieutenant Colonel Guren has issued orders," Shinoa Hīragi said.
"What? Guren's here too?" Yūichirō Hyakuya was surprised.
"Yes, all bases received the message. He's at the Gochōme intersection in west Shinjuku, engaged in a major battle with the main vampire force. We need to go immediately. We can't wait for Mitsuba Sangū and the others. They'll get the same message if they arrive here," Shinoa Hīragi explained.
"If we take out the main force, we win this war," Yūichirō Hyakuya said, excited at the prospect of fighting the main vampire force.
Aoki interjected. "Don't get ahead of yourselves. You think taking out the main vampire force guarantees our victory? They'll think the same—that taking out Guren and his squad means victory for them. It's all relative. And I doubt Guren can defeat the main vampire force."
"Remember that vampire noble outside Shinjuku? He was far stronger than Guren, and he wasn't even the main commander. Guren is likely fighting someone even stronger."
Yūichirō Hyakuya and Shinoa Hīragi's faces fell. Aoki's analysis was correct. If they encountered a vampire noble, they'd be slaughtered.
"We need to go. You two might be useless, but I can handle a few vampire nobles. Mitsuba Sangū and the others will find out where we are and catch up. We don't need to wait for them," Aoki said.
As they prepared to leave for 5th Street, they heard shouting from a nearby tent.
"I told you this wouldn't work! Orders are to send everyone to the defense point. If that line breaks, Shinjuku falls!" A man in a military uniform yelled, pointing at a map of Shinjuku.
Aoki, Yūichirō Hyakuya, and Shinoa Hīragi turned their attention to the tent.
"But, the troops here are on the verge of annihilation," another soldier, also in uniform, said, his body scarred and one arm heavily bandaged.
"Shouldn't there be Vampire Extermination Units?"
"Yes, but only three—all underage kids. They're facing a whole squad. It's only a matter of time before they're wiped out."
The first soldier sighed. "If that's the case, we should send a squad there. Where are they located…?"
Before he could finish, Aoki interrupted, stepping out from the tent. "Excuse me, are the three Vampire Extermination Unit members you mentioned from the Moon Demon Company? Two men and a woman? The girl has blond twintails?"
Aoki addressed the soldier reporting the situation. He suspected it was Mitsuba Sangū and the others.
"I'm not entirely sure, but yes, two men and a woman, the girl with blond twintails. And you are…?" The soldier looked at Aoki with confusion.
Aoki's gaze sharpened. "You don't need to know who we are. Just tell me where they are."
"Shinjuku Central Park," the soldier stammered, clearly intimidated.
Aoki turned to Yūichirō Hyakuya and Shinoa Hīragi. "If I'm right, that's Mitsuba Sangū and the others. I'll go ahead. You two follow. We're short on time. After this, we're going to find Guren. Hurry!"
Aoki vanished.
"Hurry! Let's go!" Yūichirō Hyakuya reacted, turning to Shinoa Hīragi. Then, to the soldiers, "We're heading there. You just send your troops to the defense point."
They raced towards Shinjuku Central Park.
A light rain continued to fall as Aoki moved like a phantom through the ruined buildings.
In Shinjuku Central Park, three figures were battling numerous vampires.
Mitsuba Sangū and the others.
They were strong enough to easily defeat Level 2 armed vampires individually, but facing ten or more simultaneously was overwhelming.
"What do we do? There are too many vampires. We three can't handle them all. Even escaping unscathed is unlikely," Shihō Kimizuki said, back-to-back with Mitsuba Sangū and Yoichi Saotome.
"No choice. We stall. We hold out until reinforcements arrive. The odds are slim, but we can't give up," Mitsuba Sangū said. They resumed their desperate attack.
Suddenly, a figure wielding a long sword descended, landing before them.
He raised his sword, and black lightning crackled around him.
In the blink of an eye, all the vampires were reduced to dust, black electricity lingering where they'd stood.
"Devouring Breath, Fourth Form: Thunder Annihilation."
