Chapter 318 - Chapter 318: Severing the Silk (Earth-65)

No matter the circumstances, the team-up of Spider-Man and the Green Goblin always felt thrilling, and this time was no exception.

Although both Green Goblin and Spider-Gwen were severely lacking in combat experience against Doctor Silk, they possessed an undeniable determination and conviction. The battle began with a preemptive Pumpkin Bomb toss by the Green Goblin.

Doctor Silk swiftly used the web-shooters on her mechanical tentacles to catch the Pumpkin Bomb in mid-air. However, Spider-Gwen launched a web-line from the explosion's smoke, sticking it to two of Doctor Silk's mechanical tentacles.

She tried to tear the tentacles off with sheer force, but unfortunately, Doctor Silk, also possessing Spider-powers, was no less powerful than—and arguably surpassed—Spider-Gwen in combat ability. Spider-Gwen couldn't budge her even when she stood perfectly still.

At the same time, Doctor Silk could focus on the Green Goblin's movements, attacking him with her other two tentacles.

"You two novices, did you really think you could achieve anything? Think about it: with so many people in S.H.I.E.L.D., why did they send two children? Ultimately, isn't it because you two are the people no one cares about?"

"No one cares about your deaths except your parents and relatives. Why are you sacrificing yourselves for S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

"I'm not sacrificing myself for S.H.I.E.L.D.! I'm just doing what I can... for Peter!"

Spider-Gwen strained to pull. Suddenly, Doctor Silk stumbled. Spider-Gwen immediately seized the opportunity and ripped the two claws from her back.

Then, the Pumpkin Bomb exploded directly on Doctor Silk's back, completely destroying the control system. Doctor Silk had no idea why she had suddenly tripped, leading to such a humiliating defeat.

After a moment of silence, Peter looked at Gwen (from 616), who had been standing next to him. "Did you go help?"

Gwen shrugged helplessly, indicating she genuinely hadn't gone to help.

But what was the truth?

The truth was, perhaps no one cared anymore.

But Doctor Silk had other ways to deal with Spider-Woman.

"Damn it! You insolent wretch!"

Doctor Silk finally unleashed her last resort: "I granted you your powers! Naturally, I can take them back!"

Her hand flashed with white light and smacked toward Spider-Gwen.

Her hand did strike Spider-Gwen, and she felt the other person's power draining away, so she flashed a confident smile.

Then, she realized she had missed. She hadn't hit anything. Spider-Woman, whose power was still intact, webbed a trash can and smashed it hard into Doctor Silk's face. Green Goblin swooped down next, joining the beatdown.

During the ensuing pummeling, Peter looked at Gwen in the corner, confirmed she had indeed gone up impatiently to help, and asked Miguel, "Could a Web-Breaking Event have been triggered?"

Miguel, completely unaware of Gwen's abilities, had no idea what had happened.

"No, all data is normal."

"..."

Gwen's power is truly outrageous; it doesn't even trigger a Web-Breaking Event.

Meanwhile, after Doctor Silk had been beaten to within an inch of her life, Gwen (Earth-65) tiredly walked over and thanked Gwen (Earth-616). "Thank you. If she had actually touched me and canceled my powers, I might not have been able to defeat her."

"I think her so-called power deprivation isn't that great. It only took away the Spider-powers I gained, but it didn't touch the Ghost powers I got."

Peter felt speechless hearing this. Her "Ghost" power was granted by the Cosmic Cube! What right did Cindy Moon (Earth-65) have to strip away the power granted by a Cosmic Cube?

Then, Spider-Gwen noticed Miguel and let out an exclamation.

"Wow, who is this muscular hunk who just showed up? Blue Panther? Blue Cloak? Blackened Garfield? Or Liberty Man?"

Miguel's list of disapproved people +1.

"I am Miguel O'Hara, the Spider-Man from Earth-928. This is a symbol of our alliance—a Multiverse travel bracelet. Of course, you cannot travel arbitrarily, to prevent you from triggering a potential Web-Breaking Event."

"In our world, Reed Richards just finished developing a Multiverse travel device."

Miguel looked at Gwen with increasing exasperation. "Earth-928 is one of the possible futures of Earth-616. So, our technology actually originates from yours; this is the 2099 version of Reed Richards' technology."

Gwen simply replied "Oh," and said no more. Spider-Gwen, however, took the bracelet and began fiddling with it.

Meanwhile, Green Goblin sat on the side, looking completely disillusioned, as if he had lost all hope in life, just waiting for S.H.I.E.L.D. to come and arrest the entire Sinister Six and throw them in jail, preferably sentencing them to death.

"So, what's the plan now?" Peter asked Spider-Gwen. Although the core problem wasn't solved, the great revenge was accomplished. At least Gwen and Harry had momentarily lost their purpose in life.

"I... I don't know. Maybe be a superhero? Maybe do something else? Ugh, I'll figure it out later."

This world was dark, and it was full of super-villains. Even Gwen herself didn't know what she should do.

And Doctor Silk's words had undeniably made something clear to Gwen:

You never thought killing the Lizard was wrong. You were only scared and regretful because you discovered the Lizard was your friend.

Spider-Gwen pondered this for a long time, then looked at Peter. "Have you ever killed anyone?"

She wasn't sure what answer she would get, but she felt he hadn't. Spider-Man was from Earth-616, a pure hero.

But Peter's answer surprised her. "Uh, it depends. I took out a lot of zombies in the zombie universe, and in other situations, I've tried to kill people who hurt, or intended to hurt, those around me. Even though the reason they died ultimately wasn't my fault, I genuinely intended to kill them and even thought I had killed them once."

Gwen (616) clasped Peter's hand.

"If you want to know if a person who has killed can turn back, sorry, I don't know. But if you want to ask something else, like what you should do, I can tell you. Or rather, I can ask you a question."

At this, Harry also looked up at Spider-Gwen, eager to hear her answer Peter's question.

"Why did you choose to put on the mask?"
