Chapter 98 - Chapter 98: Secrets of the Ghost Ship

The Chapter get Retranslated

Qingwu deftly pulled a flashlight from his backpack. This powerful flashlight could illuminate a distance of five meters even in the thick fog.

As the powerful beam shone on the freighter, Qingwu immediately saw the dense bullet holes hidden under countless shells and seaweed.

What shocked Qingwu was that the large smokestack in the middle of the freighter, big enough for twenty people to embrace, was broken into two sections. Part of the upper section lay across the deck, while the other part crushed the entire bow of the ship.

The lower half of the smokestack was completely destroyed and deformed, indicating a violent explosion had occurred inside.

The bridge had already been crushed by the large smokestack, which made Qingwu abandon the idea of entering it to search for the cruise ship's black box.

A pile of red lifeboats lay haphazardly on the deck.

Seeing this, Qingwu roughly understood what had happened to this freighter.

It seemed that someone coveted the Heart of the Ocean and Lugia's Feather, which led to a theft, eventually discovered by the crew and captain.

A fierce battle ensued between them, and in desperation, the culprit used a bomb to blow the large smokestack into two sections.

The immense force of the explosion sent the upper half of the smokestack flying vertically into the sky, and under the force of gravity, it fell heavily from above, crushing the bow.

The out-of-control freighter eventually crashed into underwater rocks or an iceberg, sinking and being destroyed.

The captain and crew escaped before the cruise ship sank, but for some unknown reason, their life force was drained by a group of Ghost-type Pokémon.

Qingwu now had two questions in his mind.

First, had the Heart of the Ocean and Lugia's Feather already been taken? Would his risky venture into the ghost ship yield any rewards?

Second, what caused this cruise ship to become a ghost ship?

Qingwu could already smell the unique scent of Ghost-type Pokémon in the air.

That faint smell of gas, coupled with the bone-chilling temperature throughout the ship, a coldness Qingwu could feel even in mid-air. Only a ghost ship occupied by Ghost-type Pokémon could become like this.

As the entrance from the deck to the cabin had been crushed by the smokestack.

After Crobat took Qingwu around once, Qingwu decided to enter the Bede through the freighter's cargo hold.

Qingwu knew very well that the Bede was a freighter, and the few rooms on the deck were merely resting places for the crew.

These rooms held no value, and searching them would only waste a lot of time.

Qingwu entered the interior of the Bede through a damaged part of the cargo hold. It was pitch black all around, with only the constant sound of dripping water.

The cargo hold was bone-chillingly cold, more than ten degrees colder than the outside temperature. Qingwu took out a thick down jacket from his backpack to stop his body from trembling.

Qingwu then took out a spray from his backpack. This spray was called Ghost Spray. After applying this spray, Ghost-type Pokémon would treat him as one of their own. Qingwu sprayed himself and Crobat with the Ghost Spray.

Water was everywhere in the cargo hold. Qingwu even saw a struggling sea fish splashing in the hold.

Qingwu had a premonition that this ghost ship had just risen from the seabed.

When Qingwu shone his powerful flashlight around the cargo hold, he saw that it was as large as a football field, filled with various sizes of containers packed with goods.

Qingwu noticed that the walls of the cargo hold and some of the containers were riddled with bullet holes, along with traces left by numerous Pokémon moves.

A skilled Pokémon Trainer could deduce the Pokémon involved in a battle from the battle traces.

"This is Flamethrower," Qingwu said as he saw the scorched marks on the containers. His flashlight then illuminated a series of three-pronged footprints on the cargo hold floor.

"This is Houndoom," Qingwu stated confidently.

The flashlight then shone on another spot, where a corner of a container was corroded by a strong acid. Qingwu saw snake-like crawling marks on the container.

"This was caused by Arbok's Acid," Qingwu confirmed.

Afterward, Qingwu saw large cross-shaped scratches and a huge fist print on many other containers.

Qingwu meticulously inspected the cargo hold. There were traces of four Pokémon battles here.

Based on the battle traces, Qingwu deduced that these four Pokémon were Houndoom, Arbok, Nidoqueen, and a Pokémon capable of using Dragon Claw.

Qingwu also found a torn red cloak in the cargo hold. A Pokémon capable of using Dragon Claw, and a red cloak.

This made Qingwu think of Lance (Trainer), one of the future Elite Four. At this time, Lance was not yet an Elite Four member.

Currently, the Pokémon League's Elite Four members were only three: Ghost and Poison-type Elite Four Agatha, Ice-type Elite Four Lorelei, and Fighting-type Elite Four Bruno.

If Qingwu remembered correctly, Lance should still be an unknown Pokémon League Prosecutor at this time.

Lance later gained widespread acclaim after successfully eradicating multiple Team Rocket branch bases.

Only then did he enter the eyes of the League's high command, becoming one of the Elite Four of the Kanto Region, and later becoming the Champion of the Johto Region.

"Why would Lance fight so fiercely here? Could there be some unspeakable secret on this Bede?"

Qingwu rubbed his chin.

When Qingwu saw a symbol, he suddenly understood.

In a corner of the cargo hold, Qingwu saw a red "R" symbol. This was the R-shaped Logo of Team Rocket.

"This ship was originally Team Rocket's asset. Lance must have infiltrated this ship disguised as a crew member."

This big shot, Lance, had a hidden hobby: he liked to disguise himself as various novices and join different underground organizations.

Lance probably had the most alternate identities among the Elite Four; many underground organizations had his alternate identities.

In his previous life, Qingwu heard that the League obtained a Lugia's Feather. Could it be that this one was stolen from here? Qingwu mused to himself.

"But with the League's temperament, and Lance's personality, he must have discovered something to fight so aggressively and risk stealing Lugia's Feather."

"Come out, Magmar!" Qingwu threw out the Poké Ball containing Magmar.

"Help me open the containers," Qingwu instructed.

The containers had a latch with a lock on it.

Magmar easily melted the lock into molten iron with its high body temperature, then opened the container door.

A gush of seawater poured out when the container opened. Qingwu saw that the container was filled with bag after bag of swollen grain.

Qingwu then had Magmar open several more containers, all of which contained grain.

This confused Qingwu even more. A Team Rocket freighter used to transport grain? How was that possible!

After all, this was just ordinary grain. Transporting it all the way from the Sinnoh region to the Kanto Region would not even cover the shipping costs.

"Strange, there must be something strange here." Qingwu felt that if he just followed the traces of battle, he would surely find the truth of the matter.

Qingwu entered the freighter's corridor through the broken door of the cargo hold.

"Huh, how is the electrical system still running?" Qingwu saw a faint light emanating from the corridor.

On the corridor wall was a schematic of the freighter, divided into the engine room, four cargo holds, the bridge, and the crew mess hall.

Qingwu went to the remaining three cargo holds. The containers in these three cargo holds were neatly arranged, with no signs of struggle.

However, to Qingwu's great surprise, these containers were also filled with grain. Qingwu then found a large number of Ghost-type Pokémon in one of the cabins.

However, because Qingwu had a ghost aura on him, the Ghost-type Pokémon, although very curious about Qingwu's appearance, did not know what was different about him.

But after opening their eyes, they quickly closed them again. Ghost-type Pokémon prefer to be active at night and sleep during the day, and most of them were still fast asleep.

This was also why Qingwu dared to enter the ghost ship...
