"Having the joining ceremony is a bad idea," cried one of the elder members angrily, slapping his hand hard on the smooth wood. "To appoint Luna as leader with foes in sight is inviting trouble."
One of the older members, his face flushing with fury, cut in immediately. "What do you want then? To be scared all the time? To keep our Alpha single, without a mate, while our foes become more powerful day by day?"
The door burst open again, and every voice talking at the same moment until it hurt Evelyn's ears. She stayed close to Damien, her fingers tightly wrapped in her lap. The problem around her was no longer the soft whispers but deafening roars, which sounded like they would crack the roof above their heads.
Her eyes turned to Damien. His jaw was set, his eyes blazing like hot embers, but he had not yet spoken. She could feel the tension building within him, see his fingers twist around the table as if holding back the monster inside.
