Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Sweat and Soil

The morning sun crept over the distant treetops, casting golden rays across the dew-kissed fields. Ashwin stood silently on his porch, his eyes scanning the rippling grass and the soft trail of dust drifting along the path from the town. Every day here felt new—raw, unshaped, and full of potential.

The distant cries of Pidgey and the gentle hum of Combee resonated like a melody of purpose. This wasn't just a farm anymore. It was a stage. A proving ground. And Ashwin had begun to realize that the soil beneath his feet would be the roots of a legacy he never imagined having.

He took a deep breath, adjusted his gloves, and stepped forward.

"Looks like another full day ahead," Ashwin muttered.

In the orchard patch where honeyflowers bloomed, Combee hovered energetically, eager to start. Ashwin had prepared a basic aerial challenge—long poles rigged with fluttering flags, hung to sway unpredictably with the breeze.

"All right, Combee. Speed isn't enough. I need precision this time."

Combee buzzed in approval and launched into the course. At first, its tiny wings caught against a cloth, throwing off its rhythm. But by the fifth run, it had started to time its dives and flicks with startling agility.

Ashwin grinned. "That's it, little one."

[Training Progress – Combee:]

Flight Agility: +7% (77%)

Stamina: +5% (65%)

Alertness (New): +10% (10%)

Despite sweat trickling down his brow, Ashwin felt the satisfaction settle in his chest.

Ashwin turned his attention to Bounsweet, who was watching from the field edge. A path of hurdles made from clay pots and stones stretched before it. Today's goal was rhythm—movement that wasn't just fast, but deliberate and reactive.

"Let's go, Bounsweet. Steady rhythm. Think of it like a dance."

It wasn't easy at first. The little Pokémon tripped, wobbled, and often hesitated. But Ashwin clapped a beat, encouraging a steady tempo. Soon, Bounsweet moved like a spinning petal in the wind.

[Training Progress – Bounsweet:]

Agility: +6% (56%)

Coordination (New): +10% (10%)

Sweet Aroma Control: +4% (34%)

Each successful run brought a sparkle to Bounsweet's eyes—and Ashwin's heart.

Out by the fenceline, where the grass grew wild and shadows twisted with the breeze, Ashwin worked with his Galarian Zigzagoon. Today's challenge was more intense—hidden treats scattered under leaves, bark, and stone. No straight paths. No cues. Only instinct.

"Track by scent. But don't make a sound."

Zigzagoon crept forward, belly low, fur bristling with anticipation. Its striped form flickered between the tall blades like a phantom. A wrong step snapped a twig—but only once. After that, it moved with eerie silence.

[Training Progress – Zigzagoon:]

Stealth: +8% (33%)

Tracking: +10% (25%)

Agility: +5% (35%)

[System Note – Training Cap per Aspect Reached: 10% max per session]

Ashwin offered a thumbs-up. Zigzagoon flicked its tongue and dove behind a boulder, vanishing with ghostly grace.

Near the stream, Ashwin had stacked logs and vines, preparing Bidoof's most difficult task yet: reinforcing the weakened eastern fence. This wasn't play anymore. This was practical construction.

He clapped. "Nibble, this one's on you. Reinforce this spot—and make it tough for anything to sneak through."

With wide eyes and a goofy grin, Bidoof launched into work. It dragged logs, chewed edges smooth, wedged supports tight, and even used vines to lash together a makeshift barrier.

The result? Sturdy. Rough, but sturdy.

[Training Progress – Bidoof:]

Strength: +10% (80%)

Construction Skill: +6% (81%)

Endurance: +7% (62%)

Ashwin ran a hand along the new wall. "That'll hold."

Just as Ashwin knelt to log the updates in his notebook, Combee let out a sudden high-pitched buzz. It darted toward the eastern field, wings twitching with tension. Ashwin grabbed his satchel and sprinted after it.

There, near the berry grove, the plants were flattened and crushed—evidence of recent visitors.

Ashwin crouched beside the soil. "Fresh tracks… small claws, berries gone..."

Two figures rustled from the bushes—a Skwovet and a Seedot, looking panicked and famished.

Ashwin slowly reached into his satchel and laid out fresh berries between them.

"I won't chase you off. But let's come to an understanding."

Skwovet sniffed the offering first, cautiously stepping forward. Seedot followed with a tiny, hesitant hop. After several moments of silence and nibbling, the system chimed.

Ashwin watched the pair finish their meal and curl beside his boots, relaxed and full.

The training was done. The crops were safe. And the team had grown stronger—not just in stats, but in spirit.

Ashwin sat on the edge of the barn, gazing over the fields lit orange by the setting sun. Zigzagoon sniffed the wind beside him. Combee rested on his shoulder. The others snuggled in the grass.
