Chapter 41 - Chapter 39

Mancini's POV

Marcus thought he was clever. Cancel my dinner at my own house, move it to some private restaurant, then change the date on top of that. That kind of stunt might work with someone desperate to be liked, but not with me.

This happened the morning after I called him and he agreed to dinner. I had sent them to get Marie ready, just for him to call back some time later to say his fiancée wasn't comfortable with having dinner at my place, and he wanted to change everything. I had kept my voice calm and told him it was okay, but deep down I felt insulted. 

I sat in the back of the dark car, staring out at the city sliding past the window. Lionel was beside me, scrolling through his phone. He kept his eyes ahead, saying nothing. He knew when I was angry.

"He still doesn't get it," I said finally. "Marcus doesn't see what I'm capable of. He thinks because he moves the date, I'll dance to his tune."
