Chapter 28 - A Quiet Moment With Her Crowded Mind

Sam didn't try to fill the silence or ask more questions. He just reached out slowly, and touched the center of her back.

She didn't move away, but didn't lean into it either.

They just stood there for a while, surrounded by the low buzz of lights, the faint scent of detergent, and the aftermath of things left unsaid.

When her breathing finally evened out and her shoulders stopped trembling, Sam spoke.

"We should go home," he said softly. "You need to get some rest."

Selena didn't turn around.

"I think you should go home," she said, her voice flat but calm. "I want to walk for a little while."

He hesitated.

"Selena…"

"I'm fine."

"I don't think you should be alone right now," he said, more gently than before. "Let me accompany you."

She turned finally. Her eyes were heavy with something that went deeper than exhaustion.

"I don't want Jennette to think anything," she said.

That landed between them like a brick.
