Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

Later in the day, Angelica retired to her coffin before sundown, while Megan accompanied Joseph on a walk. Joseph climbed into a tree, prompting Megan to observe him as he settled onto a branch and began to express distress in a manner reminiscent of a puppy, even though he was human. Megan remarked, "Come on, Joseph, you cannot remain up there indefinitely." Joseph replied, "Perhaps not. However, it does not prevent me from missing her or feeling remorseful about my actions." Lying down on the branch, Joseph listened to Megan as his jewel emitted a blue glow. Megan reassured him, saying, "Come on, Joseph. You did not harm me, and I do not anticipate it happening again." Joseph responded, "But what if it does? What if I fail to recognize you and cannot restrain myself next time?" Joseph embraced the branch, overcome with emotion much like the previous night. Megan then stated, "Well, this is proving unproductive. Please come down, Joseph." Joseph descended from the tree, still feeling sad, with his amulet still glowing blue.

Before sundown, Megan took Joseph to the Siret River. As Joseph gazed at his reflection, a tear transformed his image from human to werewolf. Angelica overheard their conversation: Megan asked if Joseph had considered giving up his power. Joseph admitted he had, but only if he found someone else, mentioning Angelica as another "monster." Saying he needed a walk, Joseph left and told Megan there was no need to follow him. Angelica walked away, troubled and uncertain, aware of the risks and heartbreak of reuniting with Joseph.

The narrator recounted, "Joseph departed with a somber demeanor, making his way across town before sundown and contemplating the implications of not being able to control his abilities. As he proceeded, he observed that the city had a notable admiration for werewolves, as evidenced by a dedicated statue. Upon glancing at his hands, Joseph noticed they were developing fur and transforming into paws as dusk approached. He discreetly concealed them in his pockets to avoid drawing attention from the townspeople. The werewolf statue inspired Joseph, prompting him to quickly make his way down an alley toward the cemetery. Upon arrival, he located the mausoleum dedicated to deceased werewolves. During this time, Megan covertly watched him as he examined the mausoleum; while she did not notice any peculiarities on its surface, she did observe several werewolf statues nearby."

Joseph glanced above the door and noticed an inscription. Upon reading it, he stated, "If you can read this, it signifies that you are a werewolf. I have arranged for only werewolves to perceive these words. If you wish to relinquish your powers and be freed from the curse, place the object that binds you upon one of the werewolf statues before the blood drinkers find you. By doing so, you will lift the spell, fully return to human form, and the blood drinkers will cease their pursuit."Sir Werewolf the First—the blood drinkers slew the first werewolf and laid him to rest in this mausoleum," the message read.

The narrator explained that Joseph carefully considered the instructions. He voiced his intention: "I must give up my powers." As Joseph began to remove his necklace, Megan was astonished that he would consider it, even though she had previously requested it. With his eyes closed, Joseph reflected on all the events since acquiring the necklace—acknowledging both positive and negative experiences. Recognizing that not everything had been adverse, Joseph ultimately chose not to forsake his abilities, returning the necklace to his neck.

He remained mindful of the inscription but left the cemetery disappointed, while Megan felt relieved by his decision to retain his powers.

As night fell, Joseph began his transformation into a werewolf and ran off, while Megan searched through town for Angelica. Meanwhile, Angelica returned to the vampires' hideout to reunite with her friends. Maddy asked, "You're still upset that you had to kill your boyfriend?" Angelica silently nodded. Maddy continued, "Come on, Angelica. You can't seriously say you loved a werewolf. He was a werewolf, and it's our job to kill them." Angelica replied, "Yeah, I understand. I need some time alone." Heartbroken but physically unharmed, Angelica ran upstairs in tears.

An hour later, Matt arrived to pick up Angelica for their final grand heist, intended to show the mayor who was really in charge. Once everyone had gathered, they piled into Matthew's car and drove around town. Angelica still felt uneasy about what she'd done to Joseph, so Matt tried to cheer her up. He began singing songs that brought back memories of how much fun they had hunting werewolves and of celebrating everything they did for their group.

When it was Maddy's turn, she sang about their various heists, with Matt joining in. The two took turns recalling past adventures and the thrill each heist brought. Eventually, all six friends joined in a song about their upcoming master heist, with Chris contributing a verse that described how this plan would finally prove the mayor wrong. Carolyn followed with lyrics expressing her excitement for the big event.

As they continued, Raven sang about how much better things would be now that the werewolf was gone—no one would interfere with their plans anymore. After her verse, Angelica felt some guilt and watched as Chris leaned out the window, singing that he hoped neither the police nor the mayor would cross their path during the heist. Carolyn added her own verse, imagining them pulling off the job undetected, leaving no evidence behind.

Then, Matt pressed a button, transforming their car into a convertible. Maddy, Angelica, and Chris stood up and sang together, confidently declaring that after this heist, they'd prove the mayor wrong and silence their critics for good. When their song ended, the trio sat back down, and Matt closed the roof of the car with another press of the button.

After reaching their destination, Matt parked the car, and everyone put on their disguises. "Alright, is everyone clear on the plan?" Matthew asked. The other vampires responded with a unanimous "Yep." Angelica voiced her concern: "I'm not sure about this. Pulling off this heist may prove the mayor wrong, but it's risky—every criminal who's tried has failed." "Let me clarify," Matthew replied, "it's only ever broken human criminals." At that moment, Carolyn held up a newspaper and added, "Except for The Slaying Mask. Nobody ever caught him. In fact, we don't even know if he attempted this job." Chris nodded, "That's true, but he stopped stealing after that for some reason." Raven concluded, "Whatever happened, he's out of the picture and won't get in our way."
