Thane. Of all people, he was the last person Ryn had ever suspected to be Zhao. Ever since they were brought into this strange world, Thane had protected him.
Even in their world, he had been Ryn's only friend. To see now that the one he trusted most was Zhao, the villain Veyr had warned him about, shattered something deep inside him.
"Why are you doing this?" Ryn shouted, his voice breaking as he clutched Veyr tightly. "Why did you bring the students into this world and make them suffer? Why would you do something so cruel?"
Thane began to laugh, his laughter low and echoing like a curse. He rubbed a hand down his face and looked at Ryn with eyes that gleamed with mockery. "Isn't it obvious?" he asked softly. "Do you not see why I went to such lengths to trap you in this world?"
"Because I am the dragon reborn?" Ryn's tone was uncertain, yet the words trembled with realization.
