Chapter 28 - Solving the Maze

Lukas was repairing his armor. "If I could just fix this—" The armor started to glow, it had worked, "Bingo!" A grin spread over his face and he started to type something into the semi-holographic keyboard on his wrist.

A light extended from his body and shone through the maze. Once the light died, the semi-holographic keyboard turned into a display and displayed a live map of the layout of the maze he was inside.

His grin grew in size as he marked a path on his map and started to follow it. If everything went smoothly, he should reach Lina's core in an hour. But his journey would prove not as straightforward.

"Why is it taking so long?" The frustration in his voice was evident, "It has been 2 hours. This damned creature keeps changing the maze!" He started screaming at the walls of the maze, or Lina's tentacles. His fists clenched as he wanted to attack the walls, but hurting the tentacles without losing energy would leave him defenseless. "You know what? If you cheat, I cheat" He quickly searched for Lina's core on the map and drew a straight path to it, ignoring walls.

Positioning himself to face the core, or Lina's body( or whatever, I ain't no biologist) he activated the shield which would melt living tissue and flesh and sprinted towards the core.

The resistance of the tentacles was weak, if only for the moment. The same moment Lina understood his plan, she pulled all the tentacles making up the maze in between herself and Lukas, trying to stop him. And while the resistance became harder and harder, Lukas had to think of a new plan.

"You wish…" He muttered under his breath and jumped to the side running for a short period of time past the pillar of tentacles meant to stop him.

To stop him from continuing, Lina's pillar of tentacles slammed against his side and dissolved partly. Lukas flew to the side and rolled across the dirty ground. He moaned in pain and grunted loudly.

His armor rang an alarm and he quickly tried to read what it tried telling him. "Shit." He whispered as the light coming from the ceiling darkened and the pillar slammed into his back.

Spit flew from his mouth and with it blood. "Fuck…" His voice was filled with pain as the pillar continued to press down upon his body. The dissolving flesh turned liquid and the small pocket of air he was in started to fill with the fluids it dissolved into. Dissolved tentacles were quickly replaced by new ones so he would not have the ability to stand up or a bigger pocket of air.

He tried to stand up and pressed his back against the melting pillar. He typed into his keyboard: "Initiate self-destruction protocol. Keyword: FuckThis." His armor started to pulsate.

The tentacles, knowing what he was trying to do, tried to flee and protect the body.

"Hell…" He muttered, "Hell no… I ain't gonna let you do that!" He grabbed as many tentacles as he could and pulled at them, slowly walking closer to her body while pulling it closer across the floor.

The tentacles noticed that they stopped melting as the armor was pulling all available energy to self-destruct. Instantly, they tried to attack him. Dozens of spikes grew on the tentacles he was holding and punctured his skin and flesh, reaching his bones.

The spikes retracted and attacked other places on his body, over and over. His entire body was covered in tiny, needle sized holes. Through some of them he bled, through others came nothing. He kept pushing.

"You… are not… going to survive this…" He said and spat blood. It felt like he had lost more than he had in his body to begin with and his body felt a stinging and burning pain. He felt his tongue get punctured so he would stop speaking, his legs and feet so he would stop walking and his arms so he would stop pulling the body closer.

Lina let out an ear piercing screech, shortly paralyzing Lukas. He tried to say something, but his tongue was pierced to the top of his mouth while one of his lunges had multiple holes, letting out air.

Having heard the scream of their queen and coming to protect her, almost 3 dozen hounds rushed into the room. 2 dozen rushed to cover the body of Lina, the rest attacked Lukas.

He thought he should grin, to make this scene more epic, but why would he? He could not grin through all his pain and there was no one watching him.

Lukas had almost reached the body of Lina as he felt the tentacles lighten. The hounds had cut them off. They hurt their queen in order to save her. The hounds on Lukas started to rip at his flesh and pull him away from Lina.

And then, the armor self-destructed. The resulting explosion vaporized Lukas' body as well as the body of the hounds on top of him. The walls of the room exploded outwards and it opened a way into space. The air shot out, pulling the debris of the walls, ceiling and floor outwards.

The hounds on top of Lina's body vaporized as well and her body, almost burned to a crisp, but still alive, flew into space to slowly suffocate to death.
