She had clearly seen how Gu You entered the snow mountain region and arrived at the camp.
'Too fast.' That was the first thought she had after reviewing Gu You's footage. He was at least five times faster than she had been when she came here. This guy didn't even seem human—without using soul power, he still managed to plunge his hands into solid ice and climb the final stretch. That climb alone was astonishing.
Curiosity had driven her to personally administer Gu You's assessment. Normally, the examinee would receive a brief on the test beforehand, but she gave none—she simply wanted to see how much potential this youth could unleash.
And in the end, facts proved that Gu You was by far the most terrifying recruit in years. Each of those four-clawed bats had a striking force of up to 500 kilograms. Even Soul Masters with three or four rings and decent physical ability would find them tough to handle. But against Gu You, they fell one after another, vanishing into drifting streams of vapor.
By the time she jumped down and reached the center of the cavern, over half of the bats had already been slain by Gu You.
'So these are abyssal creatures?'
As Gu You pondered, most of the bats diving at them had already been blasted apart. With the dim lighting, he could see wisps of mist rising from their corpses, gathering together and drifting toward the cavern holes above.
Gu You turned toward the Major. "That's it?"
The Major gave him another faint smile. "You're overthinking it."
At that moment, a low roar erupted. From a mid-sized tunnel, a massive bat burst out.
This one was more than twice the size of the others. Its abdomen bore six claws, and as it spread its wings, it unleashed a piercing shriek.
Rippling waves of air distorted space. Gu You's eyes narrowed. 'Sonic attack?'
His spiritual power surged outward. He knew such attacks couldn't be blocked by just covering ears. At the same time, he reached out and pulled the Major into his arms, wrapping his left arm around her waist. His eyes gleamed with violet-gold light.
Since she'd been suddenly pulled close, the Major couldn't see the light in his eyes.
'This brat is really too presumptuous!' That was her only thought at the moment. Strong, yes, but this was just...
Her heart skipped a beat, but to her surprise, the expected sonic impact didn't affect her. It was as if something had shielded her.
The six-clawed bat screeched and folded its wings, shooting down like an arrow toward Gu You, more shrieks launching more sonic attacks.
Gu You let out a cold snort. His gaze focused, and two streaks of violet lightning shot from his eyes. Just then, the Major looked up—and saw the glowing purple rays.
The six-clawed bat froze mid-dive. Then it dropped, lifeless, vanishing into light.
'What...'
Without soul power, and still he one-shot it? The Major felt her brain short-circuiting.
Gu You acted like it was nothing. Releasing her waist, he said, "Apologies. No offense meant. I just feared that from a distance, I wouldn't be able to shield you from the bat's sonic attack."
The Major said nothing, but her gaze changed. The curiosity in her eyes grew deeper.
At first, she too had thought Gu You was overconfident. But now, she admitted she was wrong.
But the Blood God Legion's assessments weren't just about strength—more important was character. The Legion wasn't large, but its members could trust each other with their lives. New recruits had to prove, in real danger, that they could put others before themselves.
But that had to happen in real danger. Without danger, how could that quality be tested?
So she said nothing, even though Gu You had already qualified by any metric. She kept the test going.
After the six-clawed bat was slain, no more four-clawed bats emerged. But only moments later, three massive six-clawed bats flew out from the tunnels.
Three at once—that wasn't just triple the threat. These creatures didn't just look like bats, their combat tactics were similar too. They were powerful and well-coordinated. The Major watched closely to see how Gu You would respond.
But Gu You had already moved.
In the blink of an eye—perhaps before she could even blink—those three beasts had turned into light and vanished.
Then, a black shadow streaked toward the Major with a faint thud.
She froze, certain she was done for.
But to her shock—
Bang!
She opened her eyes and saw Gu You standing in front of her, violet light flowing from his body.
'Get lost!'
Gu You lashed out with a kick, sending the massive shadow flying dozens of meters.
From the cavern depths came piercing screeches. The snake-like creature that Gu You kicked suddenly froze mid-air. Then, from the largest tunnel, a massive claw reached out, snatched the serpent, and yanked it back in. It vanished, shrieking.
Gu You's expression hardened. 'What was that? That claw alone was over six meters wide. Judging by that size, its owner couldn't possibly crawl out of those tunnels.'
He pulled the Major behind him, eyes locked on the row of cavern holes.
A short silence followed—then the entire cavern began to tremble.
Suddenly, thick mist spewed out from all the holes.
A look of shock flickered in the Major's eyes. She clearly recognized what this was. But even she hadn't expected such a thing to appear during an assessment.
The dense mist was yellow in color. As it surged out, Gu You immediately felt the cavern temperature shift—not hotter or colder, but wildly unstable. An invisible pressure poured out of the mist.
'What the hell is that?'
'That thing's strength definitely isn't normal.'
Gu You loaded another round into his firearm.
He was ready to fire at any moment.
The mist rapidly condensed, forming an enormous...
