Chapter 14 - Secrets Beneath the Flame Core

The fire cracked softly in the center of the shattered hall, its light painting Lyra's face in flickering gold.

Ren sat beside her, arms resting across his knees, silent.

They hadn't spoken since the kiss.

Not because there was nothing to say—but because too much lingered in the air between them.

The warmth between them wasn't just fire anymore.

Lyra finally broke the silence. "You remembered someone… a woman."

Ren nodded slowly. "Seris."

"She was your first?" Her voice didn't shake—but her flame flickered, betraying her.

"I think so. But I didn't choose to forget her."

"You remembered her while holding me," Lyra whispered.

Ren turned toward her.

Her hair was messy from battle. Her lower lip was still healing from the last duel. And yet in that moment, he'd never seen anything more magnetic.

"I wasn't comparing you," he said gently.

Lyra didn't speak.

She simply stood and walked toward him, each step deliberate.

She dropped to her knees in front of him, placing her hands on his.

Her voice was soft but clear. "Then show me that I'm real too."

Ren's hands rose slowly, cupping her cheeks. She closed her eyes—and he kissed her.

This time, there was no hesitation.

Her lips parted against his, and she leaned in, pressing her body into his with unspoken longing. Her hands slid up around his neck, fingers twisting in his hair.

The kiss deepened.

And when she shifted, straddling his lap, Ren's breath caught—but he didn't stop her.

His hands moved from her waist, slowly brushing under the hem of her cloak, fingertips gliding across the bare skin of her lower back.

She gasped softly into his mouth and pulled back just enough to whisper, "I've burned kingdoms before. But I've never felt anything like this."

Ren rested his forehead against hers. "Neither have I."

Her fingers trailed down his chest, stopping at the center of his flame mark.

"You've changed me," she whispered. "I was forged for war. But with you... I feel human."

His voice trembled with restraint. "If we go further—"

She placed a finger on his lips. "Not yet."

She kissed him again, softer now. Slower.

Then she rose, stepping back. "But soon."

The next morning, Arin sat nearby, tossing rocks into the air using wind magic and catching them again.

Nyelle stood silently under a vine, watching everything with that calm, unreadable expression.

The chrono girl watched Ren too. Only she didn't blink.

Something about her eyes made him wonder if she knew what had happened between him and Lyra.

"You kissed her." Arin said bluntly, not even turning to look at him.

Ren blinked. "You were—?"

"I didn't watch," she said. "But I can feel energy shifts. Yours and hers spiked."

He turned away, not sure what to say.

Arin grinned. "Jealousy's not the right word. But I'm competitive."

"Arin—"

She suddenly appeared in front of him in a flash of wind. Her eyes narrowed.

"I don't need to be your favorite," she whispered. "But if you ever touch me the way you touched her… I won't stop you."

Then she turned and walked away, leaving Ren's pulse hammering in his ears.

Later, Nyelle passed him a cloth.

"For your sword," she said. But she didn't meet his eyes.

He realized then — even she had noticed the shift.

And yet, she was still here. Still loyal. Still watching him from the shadows.

A silent promise.

That night, Ren couldn't sleep.

He stood under the sky, staring into the fire.

And then a voice whispered in his mind.

Not Lyra. Not Seris.

Someone new.

"I remember you… even though you never looked at me."

He turned sharply—but no one was there.
