As Chloe studied the subtle shifts in the expressions of the women, she resumed her explanation. “Allow me to make myself clear so we may avoid any misconceptions. I hold no reservations about socializing with those of the middle class who bear no titles. In fact, where I come from, it is quite customary to invite the local farmers to the manor for festivities.”

Isabella, who had been quietly observing until now, furrowed her beautiful brow. “I find it rather unjust to equate them to commoners, to put it mildly,” she said. “Your Grace, perhaps a little more compassion and understanding would be fitting.”

“Lady Isabella Tillier,” Chloe began, resting her hand lightly on her cane. As if summoned by a divine force, Lady Chelsey and Lady Spencer hastily joined Isabella’s side. “If you do not wish to test the boundaries of my compassion and understanding, I would advise you to mind your words.”
