Thus far, Chloe had witnessed many a fainting spell while acting as an assistant to Madam Walton. However, her previous patients never swayed to a calculated collapse; their vision would invariably darken, signaling an impending loss of consciousness—a pattern Lady Isabella’s infirmity did not follow.

“What happened?” Damien asked. His gaze was unwavering and squarely set upon Chloe. With considerable effort, the Duchess managed to find her voice.

“I suggested that her ladyship might wish to retire to the castle as she complained of feeling unwell.”

“I see,” Damien responded, his tone curt and unruffled.

Isabella lowered her head in deference. “I should not have come here to begin with. It was a mistake to believe I would be welcomed here, knowing just how widows and divorcées are perceived in this country.”
