“Did you think you could get away?” came the emotionless question from the man with silver hair and a sword.
“…Uriel Viche,” Gaius uttered with widened eyes.
He had expected people to search for him outside the palace, but here was Uriel, standing right in the emperor’s bedroom.
Gaius’ heart sank as the realization hit him that this was not a dream.
A tense silence hung between them as they remained still, eyes locked.
“How did you…?” Gaius began to mutter, scanning the room, but there was no one else in sight.
Uriel’s presence in the emperor’s private chambers defied explanation. It should have been impossible for him to breach the castle gates when Setta had explicitly ordered them to be sealed.
The absence of Setta nearby led Gaius to contemplate the grim notion that Uriel might have dealt with her.
