Betty let out a sigh as she set the bag against her hip. She turned to Eva with a look of grateful apology. "Thank you so much," she said warmly, brushing a stray curl from her forehead. "The boy has more energy than I can keep up with some days. I hope he didn't give you any trouble."
Eva shook her head, her smile widening though her heart beat strangely fast. "Not at all. He seems… adorable." Her gaze flicked down to the boy again, unable to resist. "What's your name, little man?"
"Donald Baldwin," Don announced proudly, puffing out his chest.
The world stilled. Eva's smile froze, her breath catching in her throat.
But Betty was already ushering the boy toward the door, juggling the pastry bag and tugging lightly at his sleeve. "Say thank you, Don."
