Joshua Joyce was in a tense negotiation with the secretive intelligence official Harold Attinger in a sterile, soundproofed room deep inside the Pentagon. Megatron, the most dangerous thing on Earth, was the topic of their conversation.
"Let's be clear, Joshua," Attinger said in a smooth, condescending voice. "You are not buying him." You have been given the right to do custodial research. He is still the United States government's property.
Joyce leaned back in his chair and said, "And in exchange for me building a billion-dollar prison for your problem and paying for it, I have to share all proprietary research and technology developed from him?" He laughed. "That doesn't sound like a good deal, Harold."
Attinger said with a thin smile, "The other option is to let him rust in the Laurentian Abyss and you get nothing." "Besides," he said, "who knows what secrets are hidden in that alien mind? The information is worth the price of admission by itself. That knowledge might be lost forever if he dies.
Joshua moved an enormous amount of money into a designated holding account, even though he didn't want to and his heart was breaking at the thought of the huge loss that would not show up on any official balance sheet.
"Great," Attinger said, looking at the confirmed transaction on his tablet. "I will send people to your chosen location tomorrow to supervise the building of the prison." In about a month, it should be done, and then Megatron will be given to you to take care of. He nodded quickly and left Joyce to think about the huge risk he had just taken.
The last "adoption" ceremony for the bio-armors was ending back at the huge KSI campus. There were more than three times as many elite soldiers sent by the military as there were mechanical animals, so the competition was fierce. The last of the chosen soldiers were getting to know their new partners.
Aidan, as Snow Jacob, told Captain Foley, the General's aide, that "Their weapon systems have not yet been evolved." "For now, you can give the hosts regular guns. "Of course," he said with the smooth confidence of a natural salesman, "my company's 'Lancer' series plasma weapons are also great. They have a neural-link option that makes the weapon fire as soon as the soldier thinks about pulling the trigger. You can get in touch with Mr. Joyce if you want to buy them.
"Whoa!" A gasp came from the crowd of people watching.
A gray mechanical python that had been curled up in a corner without moving had picked its host. It moved up the body of a female special operations soldier like liquid mercury, and its snake-like plates clicked into place over her combat suit with a series of soft, satisfying sounds.
"Is this... risky?" Captain Foley asked, and his hand went to his sidearm without him even thinking about it.
Aidan waved his hand and said, "No." "As long as they both chose each other, the bond between them will stay strong." Just keep looking. He had been bringing the python's food—Energy Crystals and high-quality lubricating oil—himself for the past month. The creature was calm.
The woman inside the envelope didn't seem scared at all. Instead, she took a deep breath and felt the suit connect with her own nervous system. The mechanical snake changed completely in front of the crowd. Its body turned into armored plates that completely covered the woman. In a flash, a sleek, gray humanoid battle armor appeared, with a snake-like head crest on top of its helmet.
Aidan laughed and said, "Looks like they're getting along pretty well."
The Deputy said, "Let's talk about those weapons again," and he sounded relieved.
"Okay," Aidan said. "Your unit was one of the first chosen for Project Chimera, so the company gave you a free set of weapons." But after this, these kinds of benefits won't be available anymore. "You'll have to buy your own gear." He stopped. "Meaning, you'll have to pay for your gear. But he quickly added, "I know you might have some moral objections, but since you'll be fighting Decepticons and other big threats, we will give you a big military discount."
The Deputy was shocked. "Isn't your boss usually in charge of these talks?"
"Oh, I just wanted to feel the excitement of making a deal," Aidan said with a shrug.
The soldiers left with a mix of sadness for the few small, un-bonded mechanical animals they had left behind and happiness for their new, living weapons.
A month later, after Aidan had made a few more mechanical armored creatures out of Shockwave's body, he and Joshua Joyce left the company headquarters and headed to the outskirts of Los Angeles. Their car drove until it came to a huge, black building that looked like a giant cube made of non-conductive metals that seemed to absorb light.
They followed a guard who didn't say anything to the building's entrance, but there was no door. The guard walked up to the solid black metal wall after looking at their pupils. A red beam came out of it and split into several strands that looked at his biometrics. A small door slowly opened in the middle of the wall when the red lines went away. Inside, it was completely dark.
They walked down a dark hallway, and the only light came from a detector next to them that was barely glowing red. After a minute, they got to another security gate. The guard opened it with a password. Creak... The door made of heavy metal swung open.
Joshua Joyce looked in shock at what was going on after he passed through. There was a rectangular water tank in the middle of the big, open space. It was the size of a small office building. But instead of fish, it held a huge robot that was underwater and bound in chains as thick as pillars. Megatron was the god who was captured.
"Dr. Snow," the guard said, saluting Aidan, "we've set up all the equipment you asked for." Just call me if you need anything. He then backed off and left them alone.
"Do you think we can really make a Mecha like him one day?" Joshua asked in a low voice as he leaned forward to look at the Decepticon.
"Definitely," Aidan said with confidence. "We'll make one that's even bigger than this." He couldn't help but feel sorry for the Decepticon as he looked at it. His mind kept going over the creature's sad future. A boy with a cube brought down a king. Brought back to life as a slave. Your own friends have let you down. And finally, your mind was taken over so you could be a corporate puppet. A long, sad road to being out of date.
Megatron cracked open his glowing red eyes, looked at the two tiny people outside his tank, and then closed them again, staying still.
"Mr. Joyce, you can keep yourself busy for now," Aidan said. "I'm going to change the equipment here and see what's still missing."
Joshua, on the other hand, could only stare in amazement, like a visitor at an aquarium of monsters. At this point, the countries of the world didn't really want to make their own Mecha yet. They felt safe with the Autobots on their side. The event that would make people build their own army of giants—Sentinel Prime's betrayal and his plan to teleport Cybertron to Earth—had not yet happened. People still believed in the aliens.
