Chapter 5 - Survive The Dawn

The world trembled, and then it broke. For Kairo, the cacophony of sirens and distant screams was nothing more than background noise, the overture to an opera he had already seen. The only thing that mattered was the crisp, brilliant blue text that had seared itself into his consciousness.

[System Initializing… Welcome, Player.]

He didn't flinch. He didn't gasp. He greeted it like an old, treacherous friend. While the rest of the world was drowning in terror and confusion, Kairo was already at work.

"Status," he commanded, his voice calm and steady in the cavernous, trembling warehouse.

The initial window dissolved and was replaced by a more complex, semi-transparent screen only he could see.

[Kairo]

Level: 1

Class: ---

Title: Regressor

[Stats]

Strength (STR): 12

Agility (AGI): 13

Stamina (STA): 11

Intelligence (INT): 15

He scanned the numbers. They were higher than a normal human's starting stats, a result of his year of relentless, brutal training. His body was a primed vessel, and the System acknowledged it. His eyes lingered on the title.

[Title: Regressor]

- A unique title granted to one who has defied fate and returned to the past.

- Effects: Mental resistance increased significantly. All EXP gains increased by 20%. You are immune to abilities that induce fear or confusion from enemies 10 levels higher than you or less.

A cold, mirthless smile played on his lips. An advantage, right from the start. He had wondered if his return would be acknowledged. This was the proof. He was not just another Player; he was an anomaly, and the System knew it.

He willed the inventory screen open. His gear was listed, mostly as [Common] or [Poor] quality items. But his eyes locked onto the entry for his sword.

[Rune-Etched Blade (Latent)]

Grade: Unique (Sealed)

Attack: 15-20

Description: A masterfully crafted blade forged with mundane materials but prepared with profound knowledge. It thirsts for mana to awaken its true potential.

Perfect, he thought. His gamble, the hundreds of hours spent at the forge, had paid off. A Unique grade weapon, even a sealed one, was a treasure that Players in his past life wouldn't see for months, if ever.

A new window suddenly flashed, red and urgent.

[World Quest Issued!]

Quest: Survive the Dawn

Description: The Great Awakening has begun. The old world is gone, and the laws of reality have been rewritten. Survive until the first sunrise.

Reward: Player Class unlocked, +10 Stat Points, [Survivor's Boon] Box.

Failure: Death.

He dismissed the window without a second thought. Just then, a dry, scraping sound echoed from the large, corrugated steel door of the warehouse. It was followed by another, then another. A high-pitched, chittering screech pierced the air.

They were here.

Kairo drew his runed blade, the weight familiar and comforting in his hand. He walked toward the door, his steps silent. The scraping became more frantic, and then a section of the steel door buckled inward, torn open by three sets of razor-sharp claws.

Small, wiry creatures, no taller than his waist, began to crawl through the opening. They had dark grey skin, oversized heads with gaping mouths full of needle-like teeth, and large, malevolent black eyes. Aether Imps. Raw lifeforms manifested from the first wave of chaotic dimensional energy. They were weak, but fast and vicious.

The first imp spotted him and let out a piercing shriek, scrambling forward on all fours. Kairo met its charge with absolute calm. He didn't waste a single movement. As it leaped, he sidestepped, his body moving with a practiced economy that his pre-Awakening muscles shouldn't have possessed. His blade sliced through the air in a clean, horizontal arc.

It connected with the imp's neck. There was a wet crunch, and the creature's head flew from its shoulders. Its body skidded past him and dissolved into black dust before it even hit the ground.

[You have slain an Aether Imp.]

The other two imps charged. Kairo felt the nascent pool of mana inside him, a cool energy now accessible through the System. He focused, willing it from his core, down his arm, and into his hand. "Awaken," he whispered.

A faint blue light traced the runes on his sword. The blade hummed with a low thrum of power, a vibration that sang in his bones. The air around the sword seemed to shimmer.

[Your Unique Weapon has responded to your mana!]

[Rune-Etched Blade (Latent) has evolved!]

[Runic Blade (Stage 1)]

Grade: Unique

Attack: 30-40

Effect: [Mana Conduit] - The blade now deals additional damage based on the user's Intelligence stat.

The two imps were on him. He spun, his newly empowered blade a blur of blue light. It sliced through both creatures in a single, fluid motion. They dissolved into dust instantly.

More imps were pouring through the hole in the door now, their numbers growing. Kairo felt no fear, only a cold, exhilarating focus. This wasn't a battle; it was a harvest. He remembered this from his past life—a hidden condition in the first moments of the Awakening. Slay enough lesser spawn in a concentrated area, and you force their leader to manifest.

He moved like a phantom, his blade a flickering extension of his will. Each step, each parry, each strike was perfect. He was a maestro of death conducting a symphony of slaughter. The notifications flooded his vision, a cascade of [+5 EXP] that he barely registered. After his twentieth kill, a deep, guttural roar echoed from outside, and the smaller imps scurried back in fear.

The hole in the door was torn wide open as a much larger creature smashed its way through. It stood on two legs, nearly seven feet tall, its skin a darker shade of grey, with two vicious horns curling from its temples. An Imp Overseer.

Kairo planted his feet, the Runic Blade held ready. This was his true target.

While the Overseer was distracted by its grand entrance, Kairo moved to a small, shielded office in the corner of the warehouse where he had set up a security monitor. He needed to see the state of the world. He flicked on the screen, which displayed the chaotic scene from a camera pointed at the street.

It was pandemonium. Cars were overturned. Fires burned from ruptured gas lines. He watched as a man in a business suit tried to fend off three imps with a tire iron before being swarmed and torn apart. A little further down the street, a young woman, cornered and screaming, suddenly erupted in a panicked burst of flames, incinerating the creatures attacking her. She stared at her own hands, her screams turning from terror to awe-struck horror. A nascent Player.

Kairo watched it all with the detached interest of a scientist observing a petri dish. This was the Great Filter. The culling of the weak, the unprepared, the unlucky. It was brutal, tragic, and utterly necessary for what was to come. His thoughts drifted for a second. Rei, with his natural charisma, was probably already gathering survivors, forming the core of a group. Darius, with his martial discipline, would be cutting a bloody swath through the initial wave. Lena, protected by her family's wealth and security, was likely safe, terrified but safe. And Mira… Mira was probably hiding, horrified by the carnage.

They were all playing their parts, just as they had before. But this time, their lead actor had rewritten the script.

The Overseer spotted him and charged, its heavy footfalls shaking the concrete floor. Kairo switched off the monitor, his full attention snapping back to the fight. The beast was fast for its size, but to Kairo, it was moving in slow motion. He waited until the last possible second before sidestepping its clumsy, clawing strike.

As the creature thundered past, Kairo spun and drove his glowing blade deep into the back of its knee. The Overseer roared in pain and stumbled. Kairo didn't relent. He flowed around it, his sword a blur, leaving a dozen deep, blue-tinged cuts across its back and legs. The creature swiped wildly, but it was like trying to catch smoke.

Finally, it collapsed to one knee. Kairo stepped forward, looked into its hate-filled eyes, and swung his blade in a final, decisive arc, decapitating it.

[You have slain an Imp Overseer!]

[+150 EXP]

[Hidden Objective Cleared!]

[EXP reward multiplied by 1.5 due to Regressor Title effect!]

[LEVEL UP!]

[LEVEL UP!]

[You are now Level 3.]

[You have gained 10 Stat Points.]

Kairo stood over the dissolving corpse, his Runic Blade pulsing with a soft blue light. He immediately opened his status window and allocated the points without hesitation. Five into Agility, five into Intelligence. Speed and power. It was the optimal build for his fighting style.

The warehouse was silent now, save for the distant, unending screams of a city tearing itself apart. The first rays of dawn were beginning to pierce the grime-covered windows, casting long, bloody shadows across the floor. The sun was rising on his new world. A world he would conquer.
