Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: A Short Lived Victory

Benji had rode with Gaileo on the first day of the battle, but instead of engaging in battle with the rest of the men he went deep into the forest and hid there and waited for the perfect opportunity to strike.

"I want you to go out in the forest and wait for the perfect chance to take the enemy commander's head. Your special ability makes you the perfect man for the job." Gaileo had told him before they set out for battle on the first day.

Benji's special ability was called, Perfect Camouflage, it allowed him to blend into any setting. He could even temporarily transfer that ability to any object that he touched. This is what he did with his blade before he threw it and severed the head of the Gosei commander, making it appear as if is head had detached out of nowhere.

"It's about time I got some screen time around here! That was a pretty nice move wasn't it Shion?" Benji asked.

"Oh? Did I hear something? No it couldn't have been. My ears can only hear beautiful things." Shion said.

"Oh come on, you don't have to be jealous. Maybe next time I'll let you take out the enemy commander." Benji said braggingly. Though Shion ignored him and took command of the troops on the battlefield. With the Gosei commander dead their army on the flank had quickly completely collapsed.

Meanwhile, Gaileo rushed forward as he had finally made his way to the enemy headquarters. To his surprise he found it to be completely unguarded when he approached. Soon after he had rode into the headquarters, he found that the enemy had simply waited for him to enter the headquarters alone so they could launch an ambush on him.

"You fell for my trap quite easily, it's too bad we couldn't use this trick one of the higher caliber generals but still taking out one of the Emperor's sons isn't too bad." The Gosei Great General said.

"You're wrong, you've made two fatal mistakes here." Gaileo responded. "The first is the you think that you have me trapped." He said as his own troops had waited for the chance to charge into the enemy that had surrounded Gaileo.

"So what? That's only a couple thousand men! What can they even do here?" The Gosei General asked mockingly.

"Your second mistake," Gaileo said while ignoring the questions. "Was enacting a strategy that left you in close proximity to me."

"Oh? Is that supposed to frighten me boy? I know everyone on the North holds you in high regard but-" The general's words and the top of his head were cut off by Gaileo's attack.

"Storm Fang Strike!"

Gaileo swung his massive axe and practically evaporated the top of the Gosei general's head. With two generals dead, and their army taking heavy losses, the Gosei army broke and scattered in defeat. After the battle, the army's officers all met to discuss their next moves.

"Brother! Are we going to celebrate our great victory here today?" Gaileo asked Justice.

"Of course not. Our work is far from over. Gosei had not fallen yet. And we still have many more nations left to conquer yet. A single victory is hardly worth celebrating." Justice replied bluntly. "Though I will congratulate you all for your hard work. Especially your strategy Ma Ten. It was your brilliant strategies that contributed most to our victory."

"I'm glad I could be of use." Ma Ten saidwith a gracious bow.

"Tch, I'm the one who took out the enemy general. I should get some recognition too." Gaileo thought. Though he knew better than to complain to his brother out loud.

"Now, as for our next objectives, I will be staying here to engage the next Gosei army that's on its way here. Utro will go west capture our objectives in Icenie. Gaileo, I want you to take your army and attack the Honshu tribe in the east." Justice continued.

"The Honshu Tribe? Understood, they're as good as conquered." Gaileo said as he confidently punched his fist into his hand.

"Just wait a second, the Honshu Tribe is small but they are mighty. What their army lacks in numbers, they make up for with skill. Not to mention, the objective you need to capture is one of the most formidable defensive structures in the entire world. I want you to take the fortress known as the Queen's Tower."

"The Queen's Tower? I've never heard of it." Gaileo said dismissively.

"It's a tower that was made for the Emperor's first wife. It was latter turned into a military installation. It's over 1000 feet tall of sheer stone walls. It's armed with dozens of ballista and scorpions. It's impossible to scale and impossible to breach. The only way to attack is to ram down the gates, which are made of Northern stone forged iron. One of the strongest metals in the world." Shion explained.

"That's exactly right Shion." Justice said. "So you can't approach this castle lightly. This won't be an easy task." He warned them.

"I agree my lord, in fact I would ask that be sent in their stead. This is an important strategic position, I would feel more confident if I was sent rather than someone as, unseasoned, as your younger brother. I request this task be entrusted to me my lord." General Utro said as he bowed and saluted Justice.

"Do you not trust my judgment Utro?" Justice asked.

"No I just- My apologies my lord." He said as he bowed deeply.

"No need Utro, I can understand your apprehension. But I believe that the Gaileo Army can complete this task."

"I won't let you down brother." Gaileo said as he saluted before he departed.

The Gaileo Army had been reduced down to 20,000 men after the battle. It would be a two day march to the Queen's Tower, and the battle there would be one that changed the trajectory of Gaileo's career and even be a turning point in the world's history.
