Chapter 3 - 3

1332 The spirits of our ancestors were peevish because we were stuck in our ways and not learning anything new.

Glendara, a carl of our clan, said that her prize stallion, Tempest, had been stolen by Rangarda Dark-Eyes of the Enhyli clan. The clan ring offered her compensation. Glendara said, "It is not the trade value of Tempest that concerns me. It is the principle of the thing. By stealing my prize stallion, she has stolen my honor:." Members of the clan ring tried to persuade her to forget the matter. She would not hear of it. "No argument can sway me, while that mangy, dug-dragging she-dog has my Tempest." We launched a legal claim against Rangarda Dark-Eyes We took our claim to her clan ring. Rangarda denied that she had anything to do with the disappearance of Glendara's horse. Her clan leaders seemed to make an honest effort to determine the truth, but ultimately ruled that there was no evidence of wrongdoing on Rangarda's part. Glendara was most displeased by this result.

The sons and daughter of Glendara recovered the stallion called Tempest, which they found secreted away on the tula of the Enhyli clan. They slew one of Rangarda Dark-Eye's sons, and wounded another. We sent a delegation to accuse the Enhyli of lying during our legal claim. They said they had known nothing about Rangarda's crime, and offered us gifts as a token of apology. We accepted the gift and pronounced the matter settled.

We were raided by the Horse Nomads. We were driven from the battlefield and looted.

Women found a talking fox in our woods. It offered us luck in exchange for 24 cows. We decided to capture the fox and sacrifice it to the gods. The fox was too clever for our hunters, and eluded us.

Vandarl led a delegation of weaponthanes to complain that the carls were being favored over them. We gave them rings and silver.

Dorasa, daughter of the Antorling clan chieftain, came to us seeking refuge from what she claimed was an unjust marriage. We adopted her as if she were our own daughter. Some of the people remarked that this act would win us no favor with the Antorlings.

Baranthos and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for membership in our clan. We accepted them, and on that day they became Brown Boar.

Eonistaran, a thane of the Antorlings, made a legal claim against us. He demanded the return of Dorasa. We told Eonistaran we would arm-wrestle with him to decide which clan Dorasa belonged to. He responded to this suggestion with a snort of contempt. "Dorasa is no cow or pony, to be won in a gambling match." We neqotiated terms of compensation
