Chapter 4 - 4

1333 Issaries said that if we acquired more treasures in the next two years, he would reward us richly in years to come.

We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.

Yorsar wanted vengeance against the men who had killed his father many years before. We sent a delegation to demand wergild for the slaying of Yorsar's father. The Heran lawspeaker said that their clan should not be liable for actions taken so long ago, when Jotisan and Argrand belonged to another, faraway clan. Furthermore, the two men had changed since they burned Dorasor. "They have renounced their brutal ways, and are now as judicious and honorable as any Orlanthi thane." They said we were foolish to even ask. Our people were dissatisfied, but none more so than Yorsar.

Three young men all sought the hand of Beneva, a young woman of our clan renowned for her cleverness and beauty. We allowed Beneva to choose. She chose Dastandros of the Antorling clan. The ten new horses did not stop the people saying that we were not acting properly; the right to determine marriages was held by the clan ring.

A new clan arrived and wanted to claim some of our land as their own. We feasted them, then asked them to go. They said the White Horse clan was grateful to us for our hospitality, and would seek land elsewhere. Later, we learned they had found a place to live in Dragon Pass.

Our warriors were stricken by a strange palsy. We propitiated Malia. The palsy went away. Many people were nervous that we had taken a terrible risk in sacrificing to a Chaos god.

Brodasart, son of Glendara, was slain by relatives of Rangarda Dark-Eyes of the Enhyli clan. Clan leaders encouraged Glendara to swear off vengeance. She said that she was sick of heart, and would think only of her son until his funerary rites had been completed. Some of the people said that the clan leaders were wrong to discourage Glendara from pursuing her natural rights of vengeance.

We were raided by the Trolls. We drove the Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.

Yorsar again asked for us to aid him in taking vengeance against the men who had killed his father many years before. We told Yorsar that it was not the right time for vengeance.
