Chapter 46 - A New Year, A New Goal

The summer warmth had begun to fade, replaced by the cooler breeze of early autumn. The streets of Glendale bustled with returning students, trainers, and families preparing for the start of a new academic year.

Inside the Virel household, the morning sun filtered through the windows as Ray finished his breakfast. Dratini, curled lazily near the window, flicked his tail while watching Pidgeotto stretch its wings on the rooftop.

His parents sat across from him, sipping their morning tea.

"So," his father said, breaking the calm. "You've come a long way this past year. Between your ranger specialization, your research progress, and everything with Silph Co... you've already achieved more than most."

His mother nodded. "But it's a new school year starting tomorrow. What's next for you, Ray?"

Ray paused, setting his cup down.

"I want to apply for the Intermediate Trainer License," he said.

There was a moment of quiet before both parents smiled.

"That's a big step," his father said, nodding with approval. "And the right one, if you're ready."

"You've trained hard," his mother added. "And you've shown responsibility. If anyone's earned that license, it's you."

Ray looked between them, relieved by their support. "Thanks. I've thought a lot about it. I want to be ready—not just for the battles, but for what comes next. With more Pokémon, I can finally begin preparing my full team."

His father leaned forward. "Remember, the test isn't just about battle ability. They'll evaluate your knowledge of the law, trainer responsibilities, and your understanding of Pokémon welfare."

Ray nodded. "I've been reviewing the criteria. I'll be ready."

Dratini perked up at the sound of his name being mentioned, slithering over and nudging Ray's leg. Pidgeotto let out a low chirp from the rooftop as if offering his support too.

His mother smiled as she watched the scene. "Then tomorrow marks the beginning of your next stage."

The next day, Ray stood outside the academy gates, uniform freshly pressed, bag over his shoulder. He wasn't just a student anymore. This year, he was walking in with a clearer goal, stronger Pokémon, and a vision for the future.

As other students filed in—some older, some new—Ray spotted familiar faces. Kira was already waiting near the entrance, waving as soon as she saw him.

He waved back and took a deep breath.

Third year had begun.
