I put aside the now empty tray of food, my eyes lifting to meet his.

"I'm done now. Please tell me whatever it is."

He didn't answer right away. His fingers drummed against his thigh, like he was trying to buy himself more time.

Then his gaze found mine, and the look in his eyes made my stomach twist.

"Do you remember yesterday's phone call?" he asked quietly.

I nodded, already feeling that pinch of unease return. "Yeah. You left right after it."

He exhaled, like the words were burning his tongue. "The person behind Agatha's attack was… Mara."

Everything inside me froze.

The sound of the clock ticking somewhere in the room suddenly felt too loud.

"Mara?" My voice came out as a whisper, almost broken. "That can't—"
