Chapter 78 - So stupid

"Who is that? Why aren't you picking up?" Ruby asked when I continued to stare at the phone.

"It's Bryce. I wonder why he's calling. He wasn't supposed to call or text me," I murmured.

"He must have a reason; maybe he's just checking up on you. He was the one who brought you to the hospital," she reminded me.

"I know. I'll call him after I return to my ward." I ignored the call and put the phone in my purse.

The phone rang two more times, then went dead. We arrived at the hospital, and I snuck into my room. Ruby didn't come with me.

"I want to go home and have a hot bath; I'll return in the morning," she said. I didn't refuse; I bid her goodbye and quietly returned to my ward.

I took off my dress, cleaned off my makeup, put on the patient gown, and slipped under my duvet. The door opened, and a nurse looked in. "You're back. I saw the note you left. You shouldn't have left your room," she said, walking in.

"I'm sorry; I just stepped out for a few minutes."
