Chapter 3 - The Auction I

The auction? What does he mean by the auction? I heard multiple other God Candidates start shouting at the man to let them out. His response was sharp and bold: "You are being sold to the highest bidder in groups; deal with it."

He then turned to the group of people that came here to bid. "You fair citizens of this fine city have come to take a group of God Candidates under your wing. We will start the bid on the group furthest left of your viewing eyes."

I and my friends looked to see where we were, and we saw we would be the last group bid out of the God Candidates in this area. We all knew that it would take a while before we were up to be bid on.

So we chose to tell each other about our stats and Supporting Deities. "I have an 8 in all my stats and a 35% magic aptitude," Josh said smugly. "Who's your supporting Deity?" Ben asked. Before Josh got another word out, the auctioneer glared at us and sternly said, "It isn't your turn, so stop speaking, or face consequences."

Josh looked offended but didn't act on it. Ben and Carlos sat down in silence, but I said, "What consequences?" My friends looked at me like I was crazy, but I held firm. The auctioneer took me out of the cage and punched me in the gut, making me fall over. He laughed at my attempt to try and talk back.

"You will learn your place here. You may be a God Candidate, but you're only a kid, so go back to your cage and be quiet." Though I was a smart ass, I instead stood back up, looking at him. "You talk too damn much." I could barely get that sentence out because he knocked the wind out of me.

"You shouldn't underestimate me, old man." He walked right back to where I was standing, and before he could hit me again, one of the bidders got up from their seat and walked to me. "That old man used to be the hero of the city."

I looked at the man; he was tall, taller than me at least. He was lean and muscular, with a mop of blonde hair on his head. His eyes were a vibrant shade of blue, which felt hypnotizing to look at.

"What do you want?" He responded with the utmost certainty. "I want to buy you. It takes a certain amount of guts to be put in a situation like this and choose to fight back." I couldn't tell if he was being genuine or making fun of me. I held my hand out to him.

[Flare] It sent out a fireball, which he dodged with almost no effort. But when I looked back at the auctioneer, he looked shocked. "What's wrong with him?" The blond man looked just as puzzled as the auctioneer. "Do you really not know what you just did?"

I just looked at him with a blank stare. "You just shot one of the largest flares I've ever seen." I look at him dumbfoundedly. "It was only the size of my palm. Is that a big flare?"

Both the auctioneer and the blond man looked at each other. "I'm offering 50 gold for him, final offer." I look back at my friends, who are just as confused as I am. "Aren't you supposed to buy a group of God Candidates? If you're buying me, you're buying them as well."

The blond man laughed and grabbed my shoulder. "I'm fine with that, sir." The auctioneer, now put on the spot, looks between me and the blond man. "This auction has gotten out of hand. Go back to your cage, and you get back in your seat. You will wait till it's your turn to be bid on."
