Chapter 72 - Chapter 71: Laws of Restitution and Justice

The LORD gave further instructions to Moses:

"If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it, he must repay five cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep. If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck down, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed. But if it happens in daylight, he is guilty. A thief must always make restitution; if he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for what he stole. If the stolen animal is found alive in his possession, whether ox, donkey, or sheep, he must repay double.

If a man allows his livestock to graze in another's field or vineyard, he must repay with the best of his own field and vineyard. If fire breaks out and spreads, burning grain or fields, the one who started it must make restitution.

If a man entrusts silver or goods to his neighbor and they are stolen, the thief, if found, must repay double. If the thief is not found, the case must go before the judges to see if the neighbor himself has taken it. In all disputes over lost property—whether ox, donkey, sheep, garment, or anything claimed—both parties must appear before the judges. The guilty one must repay double.

If a man entrusts an animal to his neighbor and it dies or is injured with no witness, an oath before the LORD will settle the matter. If the neighbor swears he did not take it, no restitution is required. But if the animal was stolen, the neighbor must repay. If it was torn by a wild beast, he must bring the remains as proof, and no payment is required.

If a man borrows an animal and it dies or is injured while the owner is absent, he must repay. But if the owner is present, no restitution is required. If the animal was hired, the fee covers the loss.

If a man seduces a virgin not pledged to another and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price and take her as his wife. If her father refuses to give her, he must still pay the full bride-price.

Do not allow a sorceress to live. Whoever lies with an animal must be put to death. Whoever sacrifices to any god but the LORD must be destroyed.

Do not mistreat or oppress the foreigner, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. Do not exploit the widow or the orphan. If they cry out to Me, I will hear, and My anger will blaze. I will strike you with the sword, and your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

If you lend money to the poor among you, do not act as a moneylender or charge interest. If you take your neighbor's cloak as collateral, return it by sunset, for it is his only covering—his cloak for the night. If he cries to Me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people. Do not withhold offerings from your grain or wine. Dedicate to Me the firstborn of your sons, and likewise the firstborn of your cattle and sheep. Let them remain with their mothers for seven days, then give them to Me on the eighth.

You are to be holy people, set apart for Me. Therefore, do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs."
