Chapter 73 - Chapter 72: Laws of Justice, Festivals, and the Angel of the Lord

The Lord continued giving His commands to Israel:

"Do not spread false reports, nor stand with the wicked as a lying witness. Do not follow the crowd in doing evil or twist justice by siding with the majority. Show no favoritism in a lawsuit—not even to the poor.

If you see your enemy's ox or donkey wandering, return it to him. If his donkey has fallen under a heavy load, do not pass by—help him lift it. Do not deny justice to the poor, nor bring false charges against the innocent, for I will not acquit the guilty. Do not accept bribes, for they blind judgment and corrupt the words of the righteous. Do not oppress the foreigner; remember that you too were strangers in Egypt.

For six years you shall sow your fields and gather the harvest, but in the seventh year let the land rest, so that the poor may eat and the wild animals feed on what remains. Do the same with your vineyards and olive groves. Work for six days, but on the seventh day rest, so that your ox, donkey, servants, and foreigners may be refreshed.

Be careful to obey all I have spoken. Do not invoke the names of other gods—let them not even be heard on your lips.

Three times each year you are to hold a festival before Me: the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the month of Abib when you came out of Egypt; the Feast of Harvest with the firstfruits of your crops; and the Feast of Ingathering at the year's end when you gather your produce. All the men of Israel must appear before the Lord God at these appointed times.

Do not offer My sacrifices with anything containing yeast, nor keep the fat of My offerings overnight. Bring the best of the firstfruits of your land into the house of the Lord your God. And do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.

Behold, I am sending My angel ahead of you to guard you and bring you to the land I have prepared. Pay attention to him, obey his voice, and do not rebel against him, for My Name is in him and he will not forgive rebellion. But if you listen carefully to him and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your foes.

My angel will go before you and bring you into the lands of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. Do not bow down to their gods or follow their practices. Tear down their idols and smash their sacred stones. Worship the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and water. I will remove sickness from you; none shall miscarry or be barren, and I will give you long life.

I will send terror ahead of you and cause nations to panic before you. Hornets I will send to drive out the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites. Yet I will not drive them out in a single year, lest the land become desolate and wild beasts multiply. Little by little I will drive them out until you are strong enough to take possession.

I will set your borders from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the desert to the River Euphrates. Into your hands I will deliver the inhabitants of the land, and you shall drive them out before you. Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. Do not let them dwell in your land, for they will lead you into sin; the worship of their gods will become a snare to you."
