And the Lord continued His instruction, speaking to Moses and Aaron, saying:
"Tell the people of Israel: Of all the living creatures upon the earth, these are the ones you may eat. Any beast that has a divided hoof, completely split, and that chews the cud—such you may eat. But those that chew the cud and do not divide the hoof, or divide the hoof and do not chew the cud—you must not eat them, for they are unclean to you.
The camel, though it chews the cud, has no true divided hoof; it is unclean. The coney and the rabbit—though they chew, yet they divide not the hoof—unclean they remain. And the pig, though its hoof is divided, it does not chew the cud; you shall not eat of its flesh, nor touch its dead body, for it is unclean to you.
Of all that move in the waters of seas and rivers, you may eat those with fins and scales. But every creature in the waters without fins and scales—whether it swarms or glides—you shall loathe. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies shall be detestable to you.
And these are the birds you shall not eat, for they are detestable: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, the kite, every kind of raven, the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, every hawk, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, the stork, every heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
All winged insects that go upon four legs are detestable. Yet of those with jointed legs for leaping upon the ground, such as the locust, the katydid, the cricket, and the grasshopper—these you may eat. But all others you must abhor.
By touching their carcasses you will be made unclean until evening. Whoever carries them must wash his garments, and remain unclean until evening. Every animal that has the hoof but not fully divided, or does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. Of all that walk on paws, their carcasses shall defile you until the sun sets.
Of the creeping creatures on the ground, these are unclean: the weasel, the rat, every kind of lizard—the gecko, the monitor, the wall lizard, the skink, the chameleon. Whoever touches them dead will be unclean until evening. If they fall upon an article of wood, cloth, hide, or sackcloth, that item is unclean; it must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening. If it falls into a clay vessel, all within is unclean, and the vessel itself must be broken.
If water touches food within such a pot and a carcass falls upon it, the food is unclean; likewise any drink. An oven or cooking pot touched by them must be broken, for it is unclean. Yet a spring or cistern of gathered water remains clean, though the one who touches the carcass in it is unclean.
If a carcass touches seed meant for planting, the seed remains clean. But if water has touched the seed and the carcass falls upon it, then it is unclean.
If an animal that you may eat dies of itself, whoever touches it shall be unclean until evening. Whoever eats of it or carries its carcass must wash his clothes and remain unclean until evening.
Every creature that moves upon the ground is detestable. You shall not eat those that crawl on the belly, nor those that go upon all fours, nor those with many feet. Do not defile yourselves with them, for by them you would become unclean.
For I am the Lord your God—set yourselves apart, therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean with any swarming creature upon the ground. I am the Lord who brought you up from Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
These are My decrees concerning beasts, birds, creatures of the waters, and every creeping thing of the ground. By them you shall distinguish between the clean and the unclean, between that which may be eaten and that which may not."
