All the Israelites gathered together at Shiloh, where they set up the Tent of Meeting. With much of the land now under their control, seven tribes still remained without their inheritance. Joshua, seeing their hesitation, said to them, "How long will you wait before taking possession of the land the Lord your God has given you?"
He instructed that three men be chosen from each tribe to go and survey the land, writing down descriptions of it divided into seven portions. Judah was to remain in the south, and the house of Joseph in the north. Joshua reminded them that the Levites would not receive land because their inheritance was to serve the Lord, and that Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had already received theirs on the east side of the Jordan.
The men went out, carefully mapping the land and recording its towns, then returned to Joshua at Shiloh. There, before the Lord, Joshua cast lots and distributed the land according to their tribal divisions.
The first lot fell to the tribe of Benjamin. Their land lay between Judah and Joseph. Their northern border began at the Jordan, passed the northern slopes of Jericho, and ran westward toward the wilderness of Beth Aven. From there it crossed the southern slope of Luz (Bethel) and went down to Ataroth Addar, then turned south of Lower Beth Horon, ending at Kiriath Baal (Kiriath Jearim).
The southern boundary started at Kiriath Jearim, reaching the spring of Nephtoah, descending through the Valley of Ben Hinnom, near the Jebusite city (Jerusalem), and continued to En Rogel. It curved northward to En Shemesh, passed Geliloth, and went down to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben. The border continued through Beth Arabah and ended at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, with the Jordan forming its eastern boundary.
The inheritance of Benjamin included these cities and their villages: Jericho, Beth Hoglah, Emek Keziz, Beth Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel, Avvim, Parah, Ophrah, Kephar Ammoni, Ophni, Geba—twelve towns in all. Also, Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth, Mizpah, Kephirah, Mozah, Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah, Zelah, Haeleph, the Jebusite city (Jerusalem), Gibeah, and Kiriath—fourteen towns.
These were the towns and boundaries that made up the inheritance of the tribe of Benjamin, divided among their clans.
