Cheongsam raised a brow. "Conveniently?"
"Yes." Mianmian tapped her fingers against the counter. "Right when business is picking up. Right when we need help most. And she offered herself so quickly, without hesitation. Doesn't that strike you as… strange?"
Her brother considered this, but shrugged after a moment. "Maybe it's just luck. Maybe Heaven finally decided to give you a break."
"Or maybe Heaven decided to test me.." she said dryly.
Cheongsam rolled his eyes, exasperated. "Older sister Mianmian, you can't suspect everyone. Not every stranger who walks through the door has bad intentions. Sometimes people really are just what they seem."
Mianmian studied his face, his youthful certainty, his stubborn hopefulness. He was still so young, still willing to believe in the simple good of people.
She envied that, even as she knew she couldn't afford it.
She sighed. "I'll think about it. That's all I promised. And that's all I'll do for now."
