By Friday, she told herself. She would make the trip, bow properly at his doorstep, and ask him — humbly — to sharpen not just her knife but her skills, her instincts, her spirit.

The kitchen smelled of steamed buns and soy glaze; the lunch special simmered quietly on the stove, and her newly assembled bao burgers waited to be plated.

But for a moment, she stood still, her fingers resting on the counter.

She straightened her back. Saturday would not find her unprepared.

The midday sun pressed down hard, casting short shadows along the quiet street. Xiao Lian clutched her small bag and hurried away from the restaurant.

Her palms were still damp. Her heart wouldn't stop pounding.

She had gone inside, asked about work, but the owner… the young woman… she hadn't agreed yet. Only said she'd "think about it."

That wasn't good enough. Not for Miss Gu.
