Chapter 105: Is This Heaven?
Seeing the Tangela get one-shot, the crowd collectively gasped in shock.
"Whoa! A one-hit KO. You don't see that often."
"Seriously! And a Psychic-type move isn't even super-effective against a Grass-type. He got a one-hit KO without a type advantage."
"That Bronzor's special attack is insane!"
"This guy is a pro!"
The crowd buzzed with astonishment, their gazes on Basalt now filled with a deep sense of caution. The few teenagers who had been about to sign up immediately paused. While they hadn't expected to win the grand prize, they weren't about to walk into a guaranteed slaughterhouse either. From what they had seen, Basalt and his Bronzor were on another level, at least as strong as the elite students from the city's top schools.
"Bronz..." ( ̄︶ ̄) Bronzor was feeling very pleased with itself. A one-hit KO with a single Psybeam? That's it? Compared to the opponents at the training camp, these guys are nothing.
"Congratulations to our challenger, Basalt, on his first victory," the announcer said, snapping out of his daze. Bronzor's debut had been impressive, but so what? A ten-win streak wasn't that easy to achieve. The first few matches might be easy, but the further you went, the more cautious your opponents would become. And from his years of experience, he knew that the later challengers would almost always have a type advantage. The club would make sure of it.
As long as no one actually won the grand prize, a seven or eight-win streak meant nothing. "And now, let's welcome our next challenger..."
To his surprise, Basalt's next opponent was also a girl. She walked onto the stage and looked at him timidly, her face blushing. "Even though you're really strong," she said in a small voice, "I won't let you beat me that easily. Go, Poliwag!"
Her Pokémon was a Poliwag, the same as his mother's.
"Poliwag" Poliwag appeared, blinking its large, beautiful eyes.
"Damn it!" Basalt's inner actor suddenly came to life. He started muttering to himself, loud enough for those nearby to hear, a fierce expression on his face. "If only that Psybeam didn't use up so much mental energy, I'd one-shot you too!"
Hearing this, a look of understanding spread through the crowd.
"I knew it. A Psybeam that powerful can't be used repeatedly."
"This kid was probably just trying to make a big first impression, to intimidate the other challengers."
"That makes sense. Bronzor are known for their high defenses, not their special attack. To be able to pull off a move like that is already impressive."
"Oh, in that case, I'm not worried. Let's go, guys! Sign up!"
The line at the registration desk started to grow again.
On the stage, Bronzor looked at Basalt, confused.
My mental energy is still full. Why can't I use Psybeam again?
No, you can't, Basalt's glare seemed to say. I say you can't, so you can't.
He tried to signal with his eyes, but Bronzor didn't get it. Since a subtle hint wasn't working, he had to be direct. "Bronzor, don't push yourself," he said, steeling himself. "You are not to use Psybeam again without my command."
"Bronz..." Bronzor sighed, not understanding why Basalt was holding it back. Fine, no Psybeam. What's the big deal? An opponent of this level is an easy win anyway.
The second match began.
"Poliwag, use Bubble Beam!"
A stream of iridescent bubbles shot from Poliwag's mouth towards Bronzor.
Vwoom!
Bronzor's psychic energy flared, and it created an invisible barrier with Confusion, blocking all of the bubbles. Pathetic. No pressure at all.
When Poliwag ran out of breath and the Bubble Beam stopped, Bronzor's Confusion shot out and trapped it, lifting it into the air and then slamming it to the ground. Poliwag was completely helpless.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
After three hits, Poliwag's eyes were swirling. Bronzor had won with ease.
Basalt's mouth twitched. He knew Bronzor was too honest; it didn't know how to hold back. Fortunately, its psychic power was on a different level from these ordinary high school students.
After easily defeating three more opponents—a Geodude, a Psyduck, and a Skiploom—Bronzor's confidence soared. Where am I? Is this heaven? I love it here! It's so much better than the training camp!
The matches continued. But all of its opponents fell to its powerful Confusion.
"Damn! This Bronzor's Confusion is insane!"
"Who was it that said Bronzor's special attack wasn't that great? You call this 'not great'?"
"This guy... he might actually have a shot at the ten-win streak."
"Dude, a ten-win streak isn't that simple. You think the prize money is that easy to get? The club will start sending out counters. The system is rigged..."
Someone chuckled knowingly, and the crowd understood.
And sure enough, Basalt's sixth opponent sent out a Pokémon that looked like a black crow with a yellow beak and claws. Its head feathers formed a witch-like hat, and its tail resembled a broom.
"A Dark/Flying-type Murkrow?" Basalt wasn't scared. In fact, he was a little excited.
"Murkrow, Tailwind!" the challenger commanded.
Boosting its speed first? A good choice, Basalt thought with a smirk. Murkrow had a high base speed of 91. With a Tailwind boost, it would be almost as fast as his Drilbur in a sandstorm. Combined with its decent attack stats, a fully developed Murkrow would be a formidable opponent.
Unfortunately for his opponent, it was up against his Bronzor. Bronzor hadn't had a chance to test out its new Gravity move in a real battle yet. This was the perfect opportunity.
Soon, a fierce wind began to blow through the enclosed battle room. Murkrow had finished its setup. The opposing challenger's face was filled with arrogance. "You're finished, kid! Tremble before my high-speed Murkrow..."
