Chapter 28 - A SIEGE OF SHADOWS

The night stretched on like a wound that wouldn't close. Inside the cabin, Gabriel slept fitfully, his breath ragged, while Rosalie dozed in a chair, gun resting across her lap. Zion cleaned his wounds in the corner, gritting his teeth against the pain. Amira sat by the window, staring out into the moonlit forest, the list Lucia had found clutched in her trembling hands.

Amira confronyed Lucia about the list of Dominic's financiers, Lucia confessed she knew some of the names but was too scared to cross them. Zion and Amira argued about their next move, he wants to disappear, run, start over; she refuses, her eyes burning with vengeance, vowing to destroy every man on that list.

Rosalie wakes, overhearing them, and pleads for them to stop , fearing the spiral of violence will kill them all. But Amira is past reasoning. She kisses Zion fiercely, promising she'll protect him and Gabriel, even if it costs her soul.

Meanwhile, outside in the woods, a pair of Dominic's surviving mercenaries watch the cabin from the shadows, whispering into radios. Reinforcements are on the way. There was a soft knock at the door, Lucia opened it with a trembling hand, and a bullet shattered the wood beside her head as the mercenaries attack.

Gunfire ripped through the cabin walls as Lucia fell back, screaming. Amira dove across the floor, grabbing Gabriel and dragging him behind the old sofa. Zion returned fire through a broken window, cursing under his breath as bullets sparked off the metal frame.

Rosalie ducked behind a table, frantically pulling out her laptop, her hands trembling. "I can jam their comms," she shouted over the chaos.

"Do it!" Amira barked, her pulse thundering in her ears.

Amira and Zion traded gunfire with Dominic's mercenaries outside, moving from room to room as the cabin splinters under the assault. Gabriel whimpers, clutching his side, blood seeping through the bandages. Lucia fights alongside them, her face pale but determined.

Between gunfights, Amira and Zion argue over whether to flee or stand and fight, their rage and fear threatening to break them. Rosalie hacks the mercenaries' radios, feeding false orders, buying them precious seconds.

The mercenaries set the cabin ablaze, smoke filling the rooms. Amira grabs Gabriel, leading the group through a back window into the dark forest as the fire roars behind them. They run into the trees, gunshots echoing, Zion limping, Lucia covering their retreat with her last few bullets.

The group stumbling into a clearing, coughing, bloody, but alive. Amira sweared vengeance as flames light the night sky behind them.
