"No, I still don't understand how to actually apply the belief mentioned in the books…"Clark sighed. "Diana, go back to the room for now—I'm going to talk to the Ancient One. I need to figure out what this faith thing really means."
Clark wanted to seek guidance, but he also didn't feel right leaving Diana alone, especially after he'd invited her to Kathmandu. But now he didn't have the time to accompany her.
"It's fine. Don't worry about me. What matters is you learning to control the Tesseract's energy. I really don't want you accidentally teleporting us into deep space someday."
Diana smiled at him as she spoke, reassuring Clark.
After leaving the cafeteria, Clark headed toward the Ancient One's chambers. But on the way, as he passed by the training grounds, he saw a group of Kamar-Taj sorcerers practicing under Mordo's instruction. Among them was someone familiar—Kaecilius.
Seeing him gave Clark an idea.
"Hey, Kaecilius!"
As the morning session ended and Kaecilius was about to leave, he heard someone call his name and turned around. It was Clark Kent.
"Mr. Kent? What's going on?"Kaecilius still remembered Clark. Their first meeting had been odd—Clark had recognized his name even though they'd never met. And the Ancient One's respectful attitude toward Clark had left a deep impression on him.
Since joining Kamar-Taj, Kaecilius had learned how powerful and revered the Ancient One really was.She was the guardian of the Earth's magical dimensions and wielded the Eye of Agamotto, which was said to control time itself.
So anyone who earned her respect… couldn't possibly be ordinary.
Clark smiled. "The Ancient One told me you're the most talented sorcerer here. Your control over magic is among the best at Kamar-Taj. I have a few questions I was hoping you could help with."
Clark figured, since Kaecilius would eventually betray the Ancient One and steal pages summoning Dormammu, he was definitely not one to follow strict rules. The Ancient One wouldn't teach him how to cast spells, but maybe Kaecilius would.
"I don't know if I can help," Kaecilius replied, curious why Clark wasn't asking the Ancient One directly. "But I'll try."
Clark asked, "The Ancient One said the foundation of magic is belief. But how does that belief actually translate into real magic?"
"If it's just basic magic," Kaecilius replied, "it's fairly simple. First, you recite a spell to channel the energy you need. Then, you visualize what you want—like a shield, for instance."
As he spoke, Kaecilius drew a circle in the air with his hands. A glowing shield adorned with magical runes appeared before them.He pointed to the runes: "Depending on the energy source, the form and strength of the magic can vary. I'm currently channeling the power of the Vishanti, which Kamar-Taj often relies on."
"But this is all I know. I haven't learned anything beyond that."
The shield vanished as Kaecilius dispersed it—he was still a student, and his magical capacity was limited.
Clark nodded. "That's fine. This already helps a lot."
Kaecilius' explanation clarified things—magic was essentially about borrowing energy. No wonder the Ancient One didn't bother teaching him spells—Clark was already a source of energy.
Now the only hurdle was understanding how to truly believe.
After parting ways with Kaecilius, Clark left Kamar-Taj.He felt a little self-conscious about practicing magic in front of others, especially when he had no clue what he was doing. He imagined he'd look like a lunatic waving his hands around aimlessly.
So he decided to go somewhere more… private.
A few minutes later, Clark arrived in the Arctic.
The North Pole was perfect.Remote. Cold, but not unbearable for him. No people. No plants. Nothing to accidentally destroy.
After confirming there were no satellites overhead, Clark began his training.
As expected, skipping spells entirely made things more difficult. He could imagine what a shield looked like—Chinese-style, Western-style, ones used by the Ancient One or Kaecilius—but he had no idea how to link that imagination to the energy inside him.
Still, Clark encouraged himself. "No big deal. Maybe with more practice, I'll get there."
After dozens of attempts, something finally happened.
Small golden sparks of energy appeared in front of him.
"This is it!"Clark's eyes lit up. He was finally on the right path.
But he also realized something: his magical talent was definitely subpar. He didn't know whether it was due to his Kryptonian physiology or just bad luck.
In the movies, even Doctor Strange—a complete beginner—managed to conjure flickers of magic pretty quickly.Meanwhile, Clark had to practice repeatedly before anything happened.
But Clark had one advantage:His physical and energetic foundation was far beyond what any sorcerer could hope to reach. All he lacked was insight.
Once those golden sparks appeared, Clark began to understand:Thoughts alone weren't enough. They needed to become faith.
It wasn't just about imagining a shield. He had to believe in the function of protection—believe that the shield would block an attack.
That shift changed everything.
Clark focused his mind on defending, on guarding himself from harm.As he moved his hand, a golden shield formed in front of him.
But it was unlike the others he'd seen at Kamar-Taj.Their shields were covered in runes and glyphs.Clark's? It radiated pure light—no runes, just brilliant, golden energy.
Clark looked at it and chuckled."Guess I'll call it… Child of Light."
Having successfully cast a shield, Clark felt his control over the Tesseract's energy surge.
A thought crossed his mind—could he go one step further?
He raised his arms like he'd seen in the movies and swung them…but he didn't have a sling ring.
