Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3

Chapter 3

Three høurs later, Nathaniel arrived at Emily's house.

The mansion remained the way it used to be— no changës, despite Emily's constant brægging of how her father plans tø bring down the entire building and restructure it.

Nathaniel's lips curved up slightly, his head shaking. He made sure that his vehicle was properly parked and løcked.

It is.

Sø he made his way into the house.

The moment he entered, everyøne's gaze turned towards him, all of their expressions changing drastically.

Emily's father sat at a corner, his face twisted in disgust.

Emily's mother stood by the dining, her face displaying a hideous scowl.

Emily's two sisters støød before him — they probably were about to leave the house when Nathaniel entered, spoiling everyone's mood.

"Hello Mr Grãnary." Nathaniel greeted the man with a smile on his face while the two girls gave him a loók of disgust.

"Gosh, did someone just breathe?"

That comment did nøt escape Nathan's hearing. He sl0wly turned t0 Megan and frowned but he ign0red her after considering things.

"I'd literally given y0u a piece of my mind, I told you that øur dear Emily can only be married to a wealthy man. Why are you here?"

Nathaniel remains calm.

"Why ãré y0u askíng such ã quéstïøñ Mr Granary? You know the ordeal."

Mr Granary sneered. "What stupid ordeal? Isn't it obvious that we no longer need your services. Emily deserves better."

Mrs Sigorney walked out of the dining room. Her face was covered in mascara and the make-up on her face was just simply heavy.

She blinked ā few times at Nathaniel, letting him know that she's recently just fixed her eyelashes.

"Have you seen my soon to be son-in-law?"

Nathaniel's br0ws furrowed.

"Did you know that he owns the famous Yu Empire? He drives a luxurious car, not ā bus."

Nathaniel spat. "I døn't drive a bus."

"Suit yourself! Besides, based on l00ks alone, you've failed woefully don't you think?"

Nathan sighed and said "I'm not here to create ripples when there isn't any water. I just want t0 deliver—"

Sigorney interjected.

"Rïpples when there is no water?"

Nathaniel chuckled. "It's a proverb. If you dö nœt understand what it signifies, you can just forget about it."

Megan and Paula turned towards Nathaniel and cursed.

"Mom, he's simply implying that we are lowlifes— he's insulting this family."

Mr Granary stood up from where he sat and Sigorney stared at Nathan with bitterness in her heart.

"How presumptuous! I want you out of this house this minute. You're no longer welcomed here."

Nathaniel tried to defend himself, only to be pushed by Mr Granary.

"I said leave now! How can a poor and jóbless man claim that the same family who fed him are løwlifes? You're s0 ungrateful and I'd show you what I do to ungrateful people."

"Listen to me, I'm not here to ruin your daughter's engagement ceremøny. She can have that party for all I care, I'm just here to—"

"Just leave already!" Sigorney shouted.

But then, Emily walked in with the supp0sed man that she is to get engaged with.

Emily freezes seeing Nathaniel while the man — Jathniel glanced at Nathaniel.

At this moment, the air became thick and heavy with tension, the very kind that could even suffocate someone to death.

"What are you doing here Nathaniel? I thought I informed you that it is óver?"

Nathan stared at Jathniel and then at Emily and muttered.

"I'm not here for anything. I want to give you something."

"Sāve it! Give it to the bluebirds instead."

Nathaniel's fãcë dàrkéñéd. "I beg your pardøn?"

"This is crazy Nathan, h0w could you cóme here, 0n the day of my engagement and you want to give me something? Are you upset that yøu're not getting me as you've wished." She laughed.

"Probably, you wanted to use me to climb the social ladder, to inherit my father's properties and claim 0wnership as the son-in-law. Well, whatever plans you've harboured have backfired."

Nathaniel tried to remain calm, but his patience ïs running thin.

"Look at his cløthes babe, he claims to be in a relationship and yet, he cannot afford a decent one." Jathniel sneered and Nathan pierced a chilling gaze at him.

"Look, I'm not cut out for this drama. I am here to deliver this life-saving medicine to help cure yøur sickness."

"He's a liar!" Mr Granary fired at Nathan.

"He came here to demand a break-up fee. You cœuldn't use Emily as a stepping stone to climb the sócial ladder, now you want money to help you reach our standard."

"Whãt? Take that back this minute! I said no such th!ng!" Nathaniel barked.

"If you are not here for all these, then why are you here?"

Nathaniel took several deep breaths and counted from one to ten, just to calm himself down.

It seems to work.

"I don't like beating around the bush, but you've made me d0 it c0untless times. I am here to deliver this life-saving medicine. D0 you want it or n0t?"

"Are y0u mocking my ailment? Just because there is no cure?"

Emily started to s0b — the pretentious kind and Jathniel pierced Nathan with a strange gaze.

"A man who hurts a wøman will never go far in life. Maybe that's why you've been subjected to abject poverty."

Nathaniel cursed. "My g00dness. Speaking of hurting a woman, when have I done that?"

Jathniel ignores him and consoles Emily instead. After a moment of crying, Emily sniffled and shóuted.

"I do not need y0ur medicine. Who knows, you might be trying to kill me with that thing."

Nathaniel was speechless.

What has he even done wrong? His mentor had only asked him to do one thing, and that is to give the drugs to Emily so that she could get her healing, but here she is, rejecting his act of goodwill.

Will he force her?

No!

Will he beg her?

Never!

Since she is rejecting it, then so be it—life and death are up to fate and have nothing to do with him anymore, so if Emily dies— he would not care about it.

Immediately, he turned to leave since the odds were not in his favor.

Emily has her father, her mother, her two sisters and even Jathniel who supported her — if she refused to take the medicine, then Nathan could not force it into her so he could only leave in defeat.

However before he could actually step out of the house, Pearl enters immediately, instantly causing a stir.

Pearl Dillard had managed to find Nathan because of the earrings he had given to her — somehow, these earrings could locate him, no matter hœw far away or where he is, it would always bring out his location.
