Chapter 121 - Side story VII: Zeus I

The sun baked the white sands of Crete. Zeus lay sprawled on a woven mat, his powerful frame relaxed. One arm was draped around Metis, her head resting on his shoulder, while the other curled around Leto, who was tracing idle patterns on his chest. The sea whispered against the shore, a lullaby of impending dominion.

Suddenly, Zeus's eyes snapped open. His head lifted slightly, his gaze scanning the horizon like a hawk. A cold and familiar sensation had brushed against his senses. 'Someone probing me—who?'

"What is it, Zeus?" Metis murmured, her own eyes opening, a furrow of concern on her brow.

Zeus laid back, forcing his muscles to relax. "Nothing," he said, the word a deliberate dismissal.

Metis studied him for a moment before changing the subject. "Your brothers… what do you truly make of them?"

Zeus didn't even need to think. The answer was a simple, settled truth in his mind. "Tools. They are tools for my path." He paused, his reasoning as straightforward as a hammer blow. "Poseidon is a strong one. He will make a fine general in my court." The smile vanished, replaced by a look of pure distaste. "But Hades... looking at him makes my skin crawl. I can scarcely believe we share the same blood. For such a disgusting dieties has no place in the world I will build."

"I can't stand it either," Leto said, her nose wrinkling in distaste. "There's something about him that just feels... wrong."

Zeus pulled her closer, his voice a low promise. "Do not fear. Once the throne is mine, I will cast him into the deepest pit of Tartarus, where he actually belongs."

A brittle smile touched Leto's lips. "It seems the Fates already knew his nature. They gave him a kingdom fit for his stench—the realm of dead and rots."

Their shared laughter was cut short as a great eagle descended, landing gracefully near Metis. She rose, untied a small scroll from its leg, and read it quickly.

"Zeus," she called, her voice now all business. "Another dungeon has been located."

He stood, stretching his body, sand cascading from his skin. "Enough leisure. Time waits for no one."

"May we join you?" two melodic voices asked from behind.

Zeus turned to see his sisters, Hera and Demeter. His gaze was a physical thing, sweeping over them, lingering on the curve of their hips and the swell of their breasts. A predator's grin settled on his face. 'Sweet desserts, served to me on a silver platter on by own. Then how cannot I savour it.'

"Of course," he said, his voice dripping with false warmth. "The more, the merrier."

Hera and Demeter bowed their heads slightly. "Thank you, brother." His eyes narrowed, catching the glimpse of shadow between their breasts as they moved.

---

The air in the dungeon was thick, choked with the smell of damp rock and old blood.

"Keee! Kkkeee!"

A black cloud of demonic bats descended from the cavern ceiling. Zeus didn't even step back. He simply thrust his palm forward.

'Thunder Vein.'

A web of golden lightning erupted, connecting one bat to the next in a chain of instant, sizzling death. The swarm fell to the ground, a smoldering heap.

Hera and Demeter gasped, their hands flying to their mouths. "Incredible," Hera breathed. "You obliterated them all with a single spell."

Leto smirked, puffing out her chest. "This is nothing. You should have seen him slay the giant demonic Wolf. He split it in two with one blow!" She mimed the action with a stick.

Pride straightened Zeus's spine. But before he could bask in it, the cavern trembled.

"ROAARRR!!!"

The roar was a physical force, shaking dust and pebbles from the ceiling. Zeus's sword was in his hand in an instant. Metis readied her potions, the glass clinking softly.

'Thunder Enhancement.' 'Aether Enhancement.'

Blue lightning sheathed his blade, while a vortex of compressed wind spiraled around it, sharpening the air.

From the darkness, a hulking shape emerged. A massive cave lion with the grotesque face of a man and a scorpion's tail that clattered against the stone. Then, all sound from it ceased. The silence was more terrifying than its growl.

Zeus's grip tightened on his sword, his knuckles bleaching white. His eyes darted, searching.

He moved on instinct, leaping in front of Leto.

'Aegis Maxima'

A golden dome of energy flared to life around them just as the right wall exploded inwards. Through the cloud of debris, the manticore lunged, its razor-tipped claw slashing the shield. Spider-webs of light fractured across the dome's surface.

"It's going to shatter!" Metis yelled.

Zeus dropped the barrier, and they scattered. The manticore's paw shattered the stone where they'd stood.

"Demeter, its legs!" Zeus barked, already charging.

Demeter slammed her palms to the ground. 'Vine Bind' Thick roots erupted, snaring the beast's limbs. It roared, muscles bulging, and then unleashed a torrent of fire from its maw, incinerating the plants.

"Agh!" Demeter cried out, clutching her scorched hands.

Metis was already in motion. "Blind it!" She hurled a flash vial. The explosive light made the beast recoil. "Its spine! The regeneration source is near its spine! We have to burn it out!"

Zeus saw his opening. He lunged, driving his lightning-wreathed sword into a patch of flesh Metis had corroded with a previous potion.

'Thunder Vein'

The manticore's scream was deafening as lightning cooked it from within. It threw him off, and he skidded across the rough stone, his arms numb from the feedback.

'Astral Bind'

Leto shouted, her voice strained. Silver chains of light wrapped around the creature's wings and tail.

The manticore's human-like face contorted in rage. It inhaled deeply, its chest swelling.

"Cover your ears!" Metis screamed.

The 'Paralyzing Roar' hit them like a tidal wave. Hera stumbled. Leto cried out, blood trickling from her ear as her astral chains shattered. Zeus felt his muscles lock, a leaden weight filling his limbs.

The scorpion tail lashed out, the stinger plunging into the ground beside his head, leaving a sizzling, toxic crater.

Metis saved him again with a flash bomb and a potion that restored his movement. "Demeter, separate us!"

'Wall of Root'

A thick barrier of thorns and vines erupted, dividing the cave. The manticore slammed against it, furious.

"Hera, with me!" Demeter gasped. Hera placed her hands over Demeter's burns. 'Blessing of Renewal.' Flesh knit itself back together.

"Leto, can you disrupt its defenses?" Zeus called, his mind racing, analyzing the beast's movements.

Leto, pale but determined, nodded.

'Astral Disruption.'

A beam of nullifying energy struck the manticore through the vines. The creature shrieked as patches of its hide lost their protective glow.

"Now, Zeus! Its guard is down!"

Demeter dropped the wall. Zeus charged through the opening.

The tail whipped toward his head. He ducked, feeling the wind of its passage, and rolled forward. He came up inside its reach and plunged his sword deep into the wound on its side.

'Thunder Strike'

The manticore howled, swatting him with a massive paw. The impact was staggering, and he grunted, his knees buckling. 'So strong!'

Seeing his struggle, Metis threw a fire vial that splashed over his blade. Flame merged with lightning. He grinned, a feral sight, and carved a burning line across the beast's throat.

It staggered back. Demeter saw her chance. 'Thorn Burst'

Jagged spikes of hardened wood shot up from the floor, impaling its rear leg.

The manticore roared, ripping free, but the distraction was all Leto needed.

'Astral Lance'

A spear of pure light shot from her hands and burst the creature's left eye.

Of course. Here is the revised battle sequence with a few more clashes and minor injuries to heighten the tension and showcase the team's resilience.

The manticore, though blinded in one eye, was far from defeated. Its tail, a barbed whip of death, lashed out again. This time, it wasn't aiming for a killing blow but for disruption. The stinger, dripping venom, swept low and fast, targeting their legs.

"Down!" Zeus roared.

They dropped, but Hera, who was channeling a sustaining aura, was a fraction too slow. The tail's barbed tip, meant to impale, instead caught her across the shin with a brutal, slicing force. It wasn't a deep puncture, but a long, ragged gash that tore through her greaves and into the flesh beneath. She cried out, stumbling back, her concentration broken as blood clouded the water around her leg.

First blood to the beast, Zeus thought, a cold fury settling over him.

Before he could react, the manticore used the distraction. It bucked violently, throwing off Demeter's constricting vines. One massive, clawed paw swiped at Metis as she tried to position for another throw. She dove sideways, but the very tip of a claw grazed her shoulder, shredding the fabric of her chiton and leaving four parallel, stinging lines that welled with crimson. She hissed in pain, clutching the wound, her potion vial clattering to the stone floor unused.

The beast then turned its gaping maw toward Leto, who was preparing another astral attack. It didn't breathe fire, but instead let out a concussive 'Sonic Screech'

A focused blast of sound that hit Leto like a physical wall. She was thrown back, her head snapping against a stalagmite with a sickening thud. She slid down, dazed, a trickle of blood matting her hairline, her spells flickering and dying.

In moments, the tide had turned. Hera was wounded, Metis bleeding, Leto concussed. The manticore, sensing their faltering coordination, gathered itself for a final, overwhelming charge.

"Enough of this!" Demeter shouted, her voice raw with effort and fear for her sisters. She slammed her hands onto the cavern floor, and this time, the roots that erupted were thicker, ancient things, glowing with a faint, imprisoning light.

'Ancient Bindings'

The vines coiled around the manticore with finality, sinking thorns deep into its hide and anchoring it to the very bedrock.

Seeing his team wounded, a new, colder rage filled Zeus. This was no longer about proving his strength; it was about protecting what was his.

"Metis, the potion! Now!" he commanded, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Metis, gritting her teeth against the pain in her shoulder, snatched another necrotizing vial from her belt. "Its spine, Zeus! Now!"

He moved like the lightning he commanded. The manticore, trapped and enraged, could only watch as Zeus lunged, his sword a blur of lightning and fury. He drove the point deep into the base of its neck, into the pulsing, regenerative tissue.

"Now!" he roared.

Metis's aim was true. The vial shattered against the hilt of his sword, the dark liquid flowing directly into the fatal wound.

The rest of the scene can continue as written, from the sizzling of the flesh to Leto's 'Astral Seal' and Zeus's final 'Lightning Strike.'

When the light faded, only a charred carcass remained.

For a long moment, no one spoke, the only sounds their ragged breathing and the drip of water.

Then Hera exhaled sharply, leaning against the wall and gripping her bleeding leg. "Is it… finally dead?"

Metis, one hand pressed to her stinging shoulder, knelt beside the remains. She touched the blackened hide with her blade. No response. "Yes. It's finished."

Demeter rushed to Hera's side, her hands already glowing with a gentle, green energy. "Let me see." She placed her palms over the gash, the flesh slowly knitting itself closed.

Leto groaned, pushing herself up, wincing as she touched the lump on her head. "My ears are still ringing… and everything is spinning."

Zeus lowered his sword, the adrenaline receding to be replaced by a dull ache in his own muscles. He looked at his companions—Hera leaning on Demeter, Leto pale and shaken, Metis bleeding. They were battered, but unbroken. His tools had been tested, and they had held.

He walked over to Leto, offering a hand to pull her up. His touch was surprisingly gentle. "You fought well," he said, his voice low.

Metis walked up to him, handing him a healing potion. "We all did." She glanced at the minor cuts on his arms and the bruise already forming on his jaw from a glancing blow. "Even you."

Zeus uncorked the flask and drank, his gaze sweeping over the ruined cavern and his wounded, but victorious, retinue. A slow, satisfied smile returned to his face. The scratches were nothing. The bruises would fade. They had proven they could bleed and still conquer.

"Good teamwork," Metis repeated, her intelligent eyes missing nothing.

Zeus's smile widened. "Indeed. But this is just the beginning."
