Chapter 17 - 17. Whale hunting

The moment Li Wei heard the sound, he activated the detection system and witnessed the entire process of the Orca pod hunting dolphins: feinting, ambushing, and collaborating. The whole sequence of actions was smooth and seamless.

They are truly one of the smartest animals acknowledged.

As for the black dot everyone saw just now, it was the dolphin that the Orcas slapped into the sky.

After stunning the dolphin, the Orcas didn't eat it immediately. Instead, they seemed to have found a new toy, taking turns slapping and bumping it, having a great time.

This scene reminded Li Wei of short videos he had seen in his previous life, where Orcas not only kicked seals like balls but also played with sea turtles like tops, truly acting like ocean hooligans.

And this dolphin unfortunately became the Orcas' new toy.

"Jack, you guy, quickly give me back the camera! I want to take a picture with the Orcas!"

"Jim, don't pull me. I'm taking the shot. I'll give it back to you right after I finish."

"..."

For a moment, everyone stood by the boat, staring in amazement at the Orca pod in the distance. As for the giant Halibut that had been the center of attention just moments before, it lay alone on the deck, completely ignored.

What surprised everyone on the boat was that after hunting the dolphin, the Orca pod didn't leave directly but turned and swam towards the Sea Monster.

"Look quickly, the Orca pod is coming towards us!"

"My god, they really are coming over."

"..."

The deck instantly erupted in excitement.

In the blink of an eye, the Orca pod had reached the vicinity of the Sea Monster, with the closest Orca only two or three meters away from them.

Seeing this scene, everyone was both excited and scared.

They were excited to have such close contact with Orcas, but scared because Orcas have a less-than-stellar reputation.

As the top predators in the ocean, adult male Orcas can reach a length of ten meters and weigh seven to eight tons. Their diet is also very broad, ranging from small creatures like sea turtles, dolphins, and seals to larger prey like beluga whales, gray whales, and humpback whale calves.

In addition, various fish, seabirds, squid, and other marine creatures are all on their hunting list.

They are practically the "honey badgers" of the ocean; anyone who encounters them is in for a tough time.

Although Li Wei knew that Orcas generally don't harm humans, there were fifteen Orcas around the Sea Monster, more than half of which were adult Orcas. If they really wanted to do something, the outcome for everyone might not be any better than that of the dolphin just now.

He had personally seen the Orcas kick the dolphin around like a ball and then swallow it whole.

"Ying ying ying..."

"Ying ying ying...."

Several Orcas approached the fishing boat, making a series of calls, and then sprayed a mist of water from their blowholes.

Jim and the others couldn't dodge in time and were sprayed in the face with seawater.

Seeing the Orcas' behavior, Li Wei instantly remembered the performances he had watched at the oceanarium in his previous life. At that time, the Orcas seemed to have this same expression when asking for food from the trainers.

He quickly shouted to Jim and Jack:

"Jim, Jack, you two go and move all the remaining bait over."

Upon hearing this, Jim and the other knew exactly what Li Wei intended to do and brought over all the remaining bait.

Li Wei grabbed a handful of squid and shook it in front of an Orca. The Orca seemed to understand what this meant and opened its large mouth, waiting to be fed.

Li Wei's mouth curved upwards. It seemed he had guessed correctly.

He threw all the squid in his hand into the Orca's large mouth.

The fed Orca let out two "ying ying ying" calls, as if expressing its satisfaction.

This scene left the rest of the people on the boat dumbfounded, and they all exclaimed:

"These Orcas are too smart."

Seeing this, Jessica and the others also started feeding the Orcas.

Everyone felt that this fishing trip was a huge success. Not only did they catch a giant Halibut, but they could also personally feed the Orcas. Telling their friends about it would surely make them envious.

Unfortunately, they had brought too little bait on their trip, and it was all used up in no time.

Everyone's eyes involuntarily fell on today's catch. They could always fish for more fish, but the opportunity to feed Orcas, if missed today, would be difficult to come by again in the future.

Anyway, they couldn't eat so many fish, so using them to feed the Orcas was well worth it.

...

Half an hour later, seeing that there was no more food to be had, the Orca pod directly dove into the sea and disappeared without a trace, as if the Orcas that had been waiting to be fed just moments before had never even appeared.

Jim rubbed his arm and grumbled:

"Boss, were we just freeloaded by the Orcas?"

"I have that feeling too."

"Hahaha..."

"..."

Everyone burst into laughter.

Just as everyone thought the Orca pod had left, several Orca tails quietly emerged from the sea surface.

This scene was Just right seen by Jessica.

"What is that?"

"What is what?"

Just as everyone was wondering what Jessica was talking about.

The Orca tails slapped hard on the surface of the sea, and huge splashes of water sprayed directly onto everyone.

Then more and more tails emerged from the water.

After the Orca pod swam away with their "ying ying ying" calls.

Everyone was drenched, with hardly a dry spot on them.

If Li Wei and the others could still laugh before, now they thoroughly remembered this group of Orcas.

Not only did they eat their fill, but they also played a prank on them.

This is unbearable!

However, there was no sign of the Orcas on the sea surface now.

Everyone could only dejectedly return to the cabin to change clothes.

After they had changed, everyone gathered in the cabin and were still talking about what had just happened.

"Boss, I feel like this group of Orcas can understand human language, otherwise they wouldn't have come and sprayed us with water right after we said they freeloaded us."

"That's right, if I hadn't experienced it myself, I wouldn't believe it."

This was the first time Li Wei had encountered something like this. He waved his hand and said:

"Think of it this way, isn't this a special experience? Maybe when you are old, you can tell your grandchildren about this."

"Haha, that's true. It still feels a bit unreal to me now."

"..."

After the commotion with the Orca pod, it was already three o'clock in the afternoon. If the Sea Monster didn't return to port soon, they would be heading back in the dark.

As the sound of the iron chain rubbing echoed, the anchor was slowly retrieved.

After the anchor was fully brought back onto the boat, the Sea Monster's whistle sounded, the propeller started, and the Sea Monster moved forward, cutting through the waves.

Li Wei came to the deck and saw Jim and the other processing the remaining giant Halibut.

"Jim, cut me a piece of fish."

"Boss, are you planning to cook?"

"Yes, we didn't have time to eat lunch. I'm going to make something to eat first to fill my stomach."

Jim and the other quickly started cutting the fish. After Li Wei mentioned it, they also felt a bit hungry.

Li Wei took a large piece of white and tender fish, and countless cooking methods flashed through his mind.

With such thick fish, steaming it would definitely not cook it through, and even if it did, the taste would probably not be great. It would be better to make grilled fish steaks directly.

Having made a decision, Li Wei took the fish back to the cabin.

As he passed by the Captain's cabin, he happened to see Jessica opening the cabin door.

He saw Jessica with her blonde hair tied back in a ponytail, wearing an oversized hoodie that almost reached her knees.

"Jessica, this hoodie is new. You can wear it for now. We'll be back at Point in another four hours."

"Thanks, Li Wei, the hoodie is comfortable."

Seeing that Jessica was satisfied, Li Wei didn't plan to stay any longer and quickly headed towards the kitchen.

Perhaps it was because he had expended a lot of energy today, but he felt a constant hunger in his stomach and just wanted to get something to eat as soon as possible.

The kitchen on the Sea Monster was not large, and it used appliances like induction cookers, ovens, and microwaves.

Li Wei simply cut the Halibut into fish steaks, then seasoned them with black pepper, olive oil, and salt.

While waiting for the fish steaks to marinate, Li Wei also put the frozen food he had bought from the supermarket into the oven to heat up.

Half an hour later, the table was filled with heated food. No one cared about their personal image anymore, and they all ate heartily.

"Li Wei, this lasagna tastes good. We can bring more of it when we go out to sea in the future, which will save a lot of cooking time."

"Okay, I'll buy more then."
