Chapter 18 - Survival

The estate was quiet when we returned, and the silence gave way to my thoughts to roar on and on in my head until I felt like screaming.

The marble halls swallowed the sound of my shoes as I walked ahead, I kept my back straight, my strides long and cold. Elias followed a few steps behind, as he always did. He was silent and unshaken.

I said nothing as we entered my wing; I didn't tell him to leave. I simply walked into my room like the scene hadn't unfolded, like my hands weren't shaking, like my throat wasn't burning from holding back something raw and painful.

I slipped off the trench coat, letting it fall in my over an armchair. Then I took of my shoes and crossed the room slowly and stood before the window. Outside, the city was still, but lights flickered far away like stars that didn't care who lived or died. It was crazy really.
