Chapter 25 - Wrong Night

A gnawing unease settled deep in my gut; there was this cold and creeping sensation that felt utterly wrong. It was quiet in the estate, everyone was holding their breathe as we waited for the men to return. It wasn't the usual comforting quiet, but a suffocating one that made me uneasy.

 I paced around in my room restlessness, tirelessly. My knuckles were all white from how tightly I was clutching my pistol. I knew it was highly unlikely for me to use it tonight but it was the only thing keeping me sane.

 But suddenly, there was a sound, like quiet footsteps trying not be heard. My gaze scanned around quickly in search of the source. On seeing nothing, my breath faltered.

 Was I beginning to imagine things? Was the silence finally getting into my head? The anxiety and paranoia were taking their toll on me.
