Chapter thirty three

I tensed up in my seat. The smooth leather suddenly felt like a pile of sharp nails. My fork clattered slightly against my plate, and I quickly steadied it with shaking hands.

A look of sadness flashed across her features briefly before she covered it up with a smile, but it came out shakily.

"Um, he's out with friends. You know how boys his age behave, right? They never stay at home."

Mom nodded enthusiastically and she did not pursue the topic further.

Her words made me remember Heath's words.

Had Kieran really left home because of his mother's return? It meant there was still no improvement in their relationship?

The thought made something twist uncomfortably in my chest. I knew what it was like to have complicated family situations, but at least I had Mom who cared. Kieran seemed to have nobody.

"Oliver you should visit more often, I don't ever see you around whenever I'm back,"
