As the doctor moved behind the table, I didn't look at him but at Vera. There was no doubt about it this time, she was scared. Her face went white and she began doing that thing she usually did when she was nervous.
The doctor slipped on a glove, and as one, the crowd surged forward.
"Stand back, stand back!" the guards cried, running around to form a human barricade.
The pack doctor sprinkled some of the powder on a blue test strip, dipped it into a clear liquid, and held it up. Almost immediately, the strip turned purple. His hands trembled as he extracted another test strip.
"What the hell is he doing now?" I heard Xavier mutter under his breath.
"A confirmatory test, Alpha," the doctor explained, suddenly aware of the whispers and murmurs spreading through the crowd.
Alpha Kai made an impatient gesture, as if to say, Get on with it.
The doctor repeated the process, and once again, the strip turned purple.
