EMMA
Terror tore at my heart like claws as I stared down at Xavier. This couldn't be happening.
He couldn't be dead.
"Xavier," I choked out, clawing at my face with one trembling hand while the other stayed pressed firmly against his chest. "Please… Please, wake up."
Inside me, Moon broke into a raw whimper that made my soul ache.
Almost immediately, I felt asoft thud beneath my palm and my breath caught in my throat.
Xavier's heartbeat was beating again.
His heart rate was slow but it was still beating and that was all that mattered.
"You're alive," I gasped, letting out a sob that was half laughter. Tears streamed down my face as I leaned over him. "Oh, thank the goddess, you're alive."
That was when the first drop of rain struck my cheek.
I tilted my face upward in time to see lightning carve a jagged line across the sky. A low rumble of thunder followed, and more raindrops fell, cold and persistent against my skin.
My heart sank.
