Scattered across the table, were Rolan's outdated security reports. I was supposed to be reviewing them, identifying gaps in our defense protocols, drafting improvements.

But every time I picked up my pen, my mind strayed to Emma.

"Focus, Xander. Focus," I muttered, pressing the heel of my hand against my brow.

But how could I focus when the mere thought of her still sent frustration spiking through me? I'd even swallowed my pride enough to approach her, just to talk, to clear the air.

And what had she done?

She'd looked me dead in the eye and ordered me to leave her the hell alone. At the council meeting, she wouldn't even glance in my direction, let alone offer a single word of thanks after I defended her.

Why the hell was I still thinking about her?
